Thanks for the help, guys. I just got my copy of Douglas Spotted Eagle’s book on Sony Vegas. He has a good chapter on stills, easy to understand, even for me. At first look, it seems like a good book.

Thank you. I have downloaded the program. I haven’t had a chance to put it through its paces yet, but I saw immediately it has a Canon RAW conversion which is great. I have been using Canon’s freebie.

Yes. The files are Cineform .avi, 16-bit .tif with a few .jpg’s. I believe you are right about the 16 bit tiffs and maybe the disk. I have ordered a new hard drive to load-level the disk access.
Will I give up noticeable image quality if I switch stills to .jpg? My focus has been on high quality video and still images. I am retired. I am doing video to record family history and pass it on to future generations. I am producing the video for a HD Vimeo account and possibly Blu-ray or Blu-ray’s successor.

Thank you for the info. I left out one piece of info, maybe important. I run the video files through NeoScene before I import into Sony Vegas. Somebody here recommended NeoScene…maybe you? I forget, but does this make a difference?

Hey Buddy, Thanks for the advice. I will use it. I tried to improve the marginal video by compositing, but that is an artform above my paygrade at this point. However, I see its possibilities. I am taking your advice and just using bits and pieces of the marginal video to give some action to the stills. I’ll use more of it on the web. The guy with the 7d used the 24-105 L-Series lens. I’m using just about all of his video, plus the stills for the DVD. I am using your settings for the project settings. Thanks again.

Hey Mark. Great stuff! Makes sense. I’ve worked with layers for a long time in Photoshop, but it never occurred to me to apply the same concept to video. Sounds like it’s going to be time-consuming, but this wedding is going to be a one-time shot…that’s what the bride and groom tell me. Thanks so much for your help.
Since I have such a hodge-podge of video, anyone have advice on Sony Vegas project settings/codecs/etc? I have the basics down on this program, but there is a lot of breadth and depth to its capabilities…and a lot of unwritten practical stuff that I don’t know.

I’m new to video, but my recommendation based on other programs is to look at your hard disk. You have a fast processor and plenty of ram, so the most likely culprit is either a slow hard disk or limited disk space. When you are rendering, large files are constantly written to disk and re-read into ram. The overall system is only as fast as the slowest component. If you purchased an off-the-shelf system, the manufacturers often put very, very slow hard disks into their systems because most people don’t look at disk speed and cache sizes. My recommendation to you is to add another hard disk…a very fast one with large cache. Then use one of your disks for media files while using the other for your paging/work/cache files. Since your current hard disk contains your Windows files, you might consider using the new disk for paging files because Windows is also constantly reading and writing files. You have to balance the workload between the two hard disks.
