I think one major aspect you may have overlooked is the audio. Depending on where the cameras were placed, if audio was recorded using only the camera mics the finished edit may look good but sound less than professional, no matter how much time you spend trying to “fix it in post”. If the sound source was a good feed from a board that would certainly help.

Ask your client if they were able to play other DVDs on their computer before. If they could, then I’m not sure what the problem is – sorry I can’t help you there. If they couldn’t watch other DVDs then it’s most likely they never had DVD playback capability… until they installed it. As far as I know, and please correct me if I’m wrong, Windows OS does not include a DVD player like Apple does.

Then there’s the moderator of this forum – Floh Peters. People like him scare me because they know so much. I don’t know if he’s ever given a wrong solution to any Media 100 problem that he’s answered. How does he do it? Is it something in his food or drink? Does he ever sleep? As a young child did his parents save him from their exploding planet by putting him into a spacecraft that crashed to earth where he was raised by the a team of computer programmers and engineers at Data Translation who developed the Media 100? Long live Floh Peters!

I actually never experienced this problem first hand – that’s the beauty of the COW. I come here on an almost daily basis to graze and when there’s new fodder out there, especially QuickTime and OS upgrades, I tend to watch for bad reactions from others who may be brave enough to start eating it up right away. I was able to avoid that particular QT 7.5 issue by watching and waiting. The Media 100 has been my main video post-production tool for the past 15 years and it’s how I’m able to make a living – I can’t afford to have my bread & butter source go bad on me. Long live the Creative COW!
Then there’s the Media 100 system itself – from day one I have considered it to be an affordable, stable, well thought out, very intuitive and easy to learn piece of production equipment. I’m so glad I didn’t throw in the towel when it came very close to being abandoned a few years back. Boris and his team are doing one hell of a job in keeping me and others in business because they listen to and respond to their customers. I don’t understand why other professionals out there haven’t caught on. I’m sure what you have now could serve you well for years to come (don’t let the person holding the purse strings read that) but when you do finally get that Intel machine and Media 100 Suite, you will experience great delight in working with a familiar interface, little or no disruption in your workflow, and capable of sooo much more. Long live Media 100!

I was/am under the impression that DSLR’s are not the best to use for event videography due to their short (12-20 minutes) recording time. I’m waiting for a model with HDMI out (before compression) to plug into a NanoFlash or similar recorder… or is there already one out there?

It looks like we are using similar Macs (although I have only 8GB RAM) so this estimate should be close. Using a self-contained export from Media 100 into Toast Titanium 10, you will be looking at approximately 5 to 6 hours before the disc is ready. Most of that time is for encoding… about 5 times the length of your video. I always do a test run on a re-writable disc and if it’s good-to-go I’ll burn as many as required before quitting Toast. I also keep a back-up copy of the BDMV folder (Blu-ray equivalent of the Video_TS folder) and use that to burn additional copies if required at a later date – Toast 10 offers this function as well as making DVDs from Video_TS folders.

Are you trying to use After Effects as an editing tool? This is not what it is designed to do – it is more commonly used to apply effects to clips or short sequences which then get incorporated into your edit timeline.

Do other DVDs play back for those PC users? Have they tried playing the disc in a different machine to determine if it’s the disc or player?
Not all DVD players are created equal, especially the older machines that can be finicky when reading “burned” discs as opposed to “pressed”. The same goes for the media… what brand of discs are you using?
