Michael, no offence intended, converting to ProRes 422 HQ is giving you smaller file sizes? – I don’t think so. I reserve the right to be wrong.

In Toast, what are your transcode settings? (MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 AVC) I know it will take time but maybe you should try transcoding with different settings. What type of discs are you using?

8 GB RAM is a bit on the low side. That and your machine being somewhat ‘old’. It would also be helpful for us to know what kind of files you are working with – HD?… SD?… codec? What are your settings in FCP? How much footage are you dealing with and how long is your timeline? Do you have a lot of effects to process?

I think the easiest way would be to duplicate the layer, turn off the original layer, and then remove the key frames on the duplicate.

It would be really helpful if you provided more information about your computer specs for us to know if it’s a hardware issue or not. Things like your processor speed, graphics card, and available RAM make a big difference in performance.
You say that you are fairly new to editing so my first instinct is that you are probably not using a fast external drive as your media drive. If that’s the case, I suggest you buy (or borrow) a dedicated drive for this purpose. If you are using an external drive, what speed is it (it should be at least 7200 RPM) and how is it connected to your system?

If you can see the effect on the footage then it’s not missing. It should be in the list of effects used on that layer.
