Thank you for all of these tips, Jeremy! This is exactly the sort of reprogramming that my brain needs to sort out whether or not I want to be using FCP X. I want it to succeed and I want to want to use it, but whenever I use it I still feel like I’m in iMovie.
Event Manger X looks like an awesome little app! The other apps by Intelligent Assistance (Project Xto7 and Sync-N-Link X) also look very useful and I’m grateful that you pointed me in that direction.

Jeremy, thanks for the Ken Stone link. I read all of the articles on his page and found them highly useful (as always – I should have looked there first). The disk image solution is a bit clunky in many ways but in some ways it’s more elegant than relinking hundreds of files. It begins to fall apart when you’re working with proxies of R3D files and you need to reconform, but I’m sure there are ways to make it happen that I just need to learn. Thank you!

I agree that the competition for FCP’s top spot is spawning some awesome options. Smoke 2013 and Edius are great examples of emerging options for most editors, though the $3500 Smoke 2013 pricepoint is too high and Edius isn’t on Mac.

What happens if you try to iterate a file project name (for automatic backup, etc…) in AE? It kills the Dynamic Link connection. Also, a small tweak in AE kills the PP preview as well.
If you have a few shots in a PP sequence that you need to tweak in AE, DL can work great. If you have a few basic changes to make to every shot in a sequence, DL isn’t bad. If you’re doing serious compositing and nesting of comps within AE, the advantages and stability quickly fall out.

Have you checked to see if Apple’s back stock of FCP 7 is exhausted? They’ve been selling it as a phone order-only release until recently:

I’m glad that PPro is stable for you. You’re the first I’ve heard of that hasn’t complained about the app crashing several times per hour. I have 4 GB RAM per core on a 4-core machine and I doubt that lack of RAM is the problem for most users. It’s gotten slightly more stable but is still bad for me.
My experience shows that Dynamic Link is an awesome, amazing idea that basically doesn’t work unless you’re doing very simple operations.
Smoke looks amazing. At $3500 it’s also in a different market.

I’m still primarily using FCP 7 because there’s nothing great right now.
Premiere on Mac is highly unstable (crashes very often for many people). Premiere CS6 might be better in terms of stability, but I’ve been saying that since before CS3. Premiere really is too unstable on Mac to use.
FCP X isn’t really ready for professional workflows in my opinion. Avid is an outdated and overpriced solution but it is probably the best thing available right now if you can afford it.
Edius is awesome (currently Windows-only) and my favorite NLE right now, but I’m not going to work in Windows unless I have to.

First off, let me express my satisfaction that my term “hell noise” has caught on.
More importantly, I’ve experienced said noise when working with my internal 7200 RPM IDE drives on my Mac Pro. I’ve certainly experienced it when working from FW400 drives but I don’t own any G-RAID FW800 drives (though clients have had me work off of them from time to time and I can’t say if I got the hell noise more or less often).
The mystery deepens, but I encourage everyone to report on external disk use when it happens so we can get to the bottom of it.

They also need to add native h.264 editing to the timeline but instead they’re working on Final Cut Amateur X v1.2, I’m sure.
