[Lucien Samary] “What do you mean by your last sentence? That the error report wouldn’t help?”

Those error reports are only really useful for Apple’s own programmers. They don’t help mere mortals like us fix problems 😉

It’s just text with a write-on effect applied, and a simple camera move. Time-consuming to build, but not complicated.

The way to do it would be to create the final image first – just type all the names in the various handwriting fonts and rotate, size and position them as necessary to build the phrase “Who’s Counting On You?” (or whatever you want it to say).

To make the names write themselves on you’ll have to use the technique described in this tutorial: Draw On Text. This will be the most time-consuming step. You might find that a better workflow would be to create a new group for each name, type the name, *then* create the write-on effect for it, *then* resize/rotate/position the group.

Then you simply add a camera, zoom in to whichever name you want to start with, and do a slow pull back to reveal the whole phrase. Adjust the in-points of all the names in the timeline as appropriate so they don’t write on while they’re still off-screen.

i don’t know about any specific Motion tutorials for creating rain, but you might be able to adapt the following Cow AfterEffects tutorials:

    Hi Lars,

I’ve experienced a similar issue with write-on behaviours and paint strokes. They would be working fine and then suddenly become invisible for no reason. It took me a while to work out that the Shape Styles were being deselected. Have you tried going back into the Shape Styles menu for each stroke and re-selecting the style?

256 samples? Wow, no wonder it’s taking so long. Following a hint in one of Mark Spencer’s tutorials, I set the shutter angle to 180 and the number of samples to 16, and that still takes a dog’s age to render at Best quality, but then I’m using a first-gen 2.16GHz MacBook Pro with only 2Gb RAM.

Yes, you could do this in Motion. There are actually a few ink bleed effects available within Motion as paint stroke styles.

The basic approach would be to draw paths, get the ink bleed paint strokes moving along them at the desired speed, and then apply them as animated masks to reveal the images underneath.

[Donald Riley] “2) I use a lot of stills and don’t bother to scale them to project settings before import, letting motion do it from the preference setting, so far so good, but everyone keeps advising to do so, but no one says why. Rendering I suspect.”

You got it. Scaling images before you import them means that Motion doesn’t have to do it, which saves on processing time and memory.

There’s another aspect you need to consider, which is Order of Operations. Pretty much everything you need to know about what the OoO is, how it can trip you up and why scaling before importing is usually the best idea can be found in this tutorial.

I’d be willing to share some of my work, but I make promos for a movie channel and also do some work for the BBC’s range of Doctor Who DVDs. If I uploaded examples, wouldn’t that run foul of the Cow rule about no use of copyrighted material? Or is it okay if the material has been legally used to begin with?

I find that Motion is still very flakey, and things can just randomly stop working – with me, it’s usually when you think you’re nearly done with a project…

You can try trashing the prefs (which has never worked for me, but it’s always recommended as the first thing to do). If that doesn’t work, try copying and pasting all your layers into a new project. And if that doesn’t work, trash Motion (using FCS Remover – your project and media files will be unaffected) and reinstall it.
