Panasonic just informed me that FCP does not (yet) support the highest recording mode of this new AVC HD camera.

It supports AVCHD only at HA, HG and HE mode without any transcoder needed.

It does not support PH mode (21Mbps) yet, which was what I tested it at.

Thanks for the info. 2.5 x realtime for a transcode?? Dang. It’s looking less and less attractive. Will look closer at the Sony EX now…

This older post seems to bring up similar issues…

    Hi guys

Thanks. The point of shooting with this camera is NOT to have to plug in the camera and import from there. I am trying to import from the SD HC card directly after copying the files to the desktop. The Log and Transfer does not recognise any of the files in the folder (greyed out) – the main files are .mts format. Imovie 08 wouldn’t be an option for real editing unfortunately. Will keep checking.

    Thanks.

We shot test shots in the highest quality mode and FCP 6.04 did not recognise the files when we tried to import them. Apple does claim support for AVCHD so what’s the deal? Where is the transcoder? Built into the import function?

I found a 3rd party app on the web called VoltaicHD which transcodes the files but was unable to use it because the trial version only allows 50 mb files to be converted, and my test shots were over 80 mb per file. Not too helpful.

Am going to test out the Windows transcoder provided by Pana next week.

I see it does only 30 fps. Too bad for those of us in PAL land.

The future has indeed arrived. Nikon’s new one also shoots HD.

What frame rates does this camera offer?

Thanks. I had a question. We shoot in PAL, so the AG-HMC152EN brochure indicates that the camera captures everything with a “native 1080 / 50p scan.” (PAGE 4) How does that translate when one records into 1080/50i mode (which is the only 1080 format available on this camera)? Will we get a picture that looks more i or p?

I like the look of 50p but not such a fan of 50i.

    Appreciate if you could clarify.

    Thanks

    GY

Thanks Nate, but we don’t and can’t film with a firewire connection going into a laptop. Not portable enough. The Olympics was done on Panasonic P2 so hats off to them. A lot of gear I bet…
