  • Dave, thanks for the answer
After reading your post (that indeed makes a lot of sense) I checked the files, both before and after the conversion. They last exactly the same down to the millisecond. Also there is no change in sound pitch. A 20% delta should be noticeable. The two clips show as 30P and 23.976P
I’m now wondering if there are two factors:
1)My 30P camera add a “healthy dose” of motion blur, so the artifacts are not so visible
2)My eyes are tolerant to the artifacts.

Funny, I’m trying to find a problem where I don’t see one. It just seems too good to be true to have a conversion like that done quickly and with no effort. In any case, Kudos to the guy that did MPG streamclip. It is a very nice piece of SW.

You should definitely look at your camera setting. Having a resolution reduction with interpolation done in real time is possible today with current CPUs but is definitely something strange that would tax your system while it is doing it and could give you frame losses etc.
Most definitely it seem a wrong setting gin the camera, I do have an old JVC with that option , it has a switch HD-DV and if the switch goes on DV by mistake my HDV footage is down converted in SD. The switch can also be a softswitch in the camera menu. This still doesn’t explain the issue with smoothcam since it should work perfectly on SD as well as HDV clips.

    “Any other possible solutions?”
What type of clips are you analyzing? FC smoothcam doesn’t analize all the clips including some supported clips, particularly if they come from consumer cameras and are in highly compressed formats like H264.
I got that problem when I bought a consumer camera the Sanyo Xacti 1010. I was really misled because I bought the camera during a trip abroad and in my hotel room I analyzed the clips with smoothcam in imovie 09 and it worked. Once at home in FC 7 it didn’t work. I spent a weekend trying to understand the problem.
Now I always transcode these clips before editing them.
