Smooth Cam will not analyze
Posted by Bret Sanders on November 26, 2009 at 7:58 pmHello,
FCP 6.0.6 will not analyze clips. I have used this effect successfully in the past, although I recently upgraded to Leopard OS X, on a Mac Power Pc dual 2.3GHZ, non Intel chips. I have been through the users guide backwards and forwards on this subject with no solution.
Thanks for any help.

November 27, 2009 at 4:22 amAlso,
OS X is 10.5.8, and not to sound ignorant–but what is “trashing” FC Preferences? I mean, I believe that we’re talking about user preferences in FCP, but do I just deselect current settings under each tab and then return settings to default? Or is more involved required?
In need of enlightenment with many short HH clips that need to be run through smooth cam before finishing the project.
Many Thanks,
Bret

November 27, 2009 at 5:32 amHi Bret,
I can not open FC right now.
You know that when SmoothCam analyze the footage it creates a kind or report.
Try to find if there is already one of these documents and delete it.

What type of clips are you analyzing? FC smoothcam doesn’t analize all the clips including some supported clips, particularly if they come from consumer cameras and are in highly compressed formats like H264.
I got that problem when I bought a consumer camera the Sanyo Xacti 1010. I was really misled because I bought the camera during a trip abroad and in my hotel room I analyzed the clips with smoothcam in imovie 09 and it worked. Once at home in FC 7 it didn’t work. I spent a weekend trying to understand the problem.
Now I always transcode these clips before editing them.Gabriele – California

November 27, 2009 at 4:58 pmHi Gabriele,
Clips are captured via firewire from Sony HVR-Z1U in FCP 6.06–and this brings up a whole new issue. A/V capture settings are set for HDV, yet for some reason FCP knocks down the capture from 1080i HDV to DV/DVCPRO NTSC at medium quality with a frame size of only 720×480??? Anybody have any ideas on this oddity?
But back to the subject at hand. So, I have successfully use smoothcam in the past, but recently upgraded to OS X 10.5.8 and upgraded all programs, and now any attempt to analyze footage causes a blip of the background processess’ window to show up for a fraction of a second and the footage is left unanalyzed.
Thanks,
Bret-Also California

November 27, 2009 at 5:11 pmThere are many tutorials as well as FAQs which explain these basic operating principles. Here’s a link to one on trashing prefs

I don’t think is FC fault.
I guess that your camera converts to DV and you been capturing DV thinking that you where capturing HDV. As long as I know FC can not convert HDV to DV on capturing. To transcode and downscale on the fly, FC needs a video-card.

November 27, 2009 at 5:29 pmHi Rafael,
Camera on screen display shows 1080i HDV being taped as do other indicator lights, and won’t synch with FCP without matching settings. Could I possibly be knocking down the capture quality unwittingly?
Mac G5 has ATI Radeon 9600 (ATY, RV351) installed via AGP Bus. Any Thoughts?
Thanks, Bret

If you want to have a happy life with FC, read the manual now and them.
Is great.
Probably is the element of FC that have been most improved since I met FC 2.5.
