They are probably still hoping they will be able to ‘strong arm’ us ‘rental freedom fighters’ into the CC fold.

‘Resistance is futile….you will be assimilated’

‘No! You can take my NLE. But you’ll never take my freeeeeedooom!’

April 10, 2014 at 5:29 am in reply to: Resolve 11 What is your plan?

I am with the former FCP 7 editor referenced earlier. I moved to CS6 as I had a hard time picking up
FCPX. Then came the CC ‘rental only’ move. Currently I use FCP 7, CS6, and a little FCP X
for quick cuts only stuff. As much as some of you hate tracks, I like them. And currently my
options are pay rent, which isn’t going to happen, or keep struggling to learn FCP X, which I’ve been
doing for 3 or 4 months. So I, for one, will jump all over Resolve 11.

It’s interesting to read this as I’ve taken the opposite path. Longtime FCP user. Changed from FCP 7 to CS6 as it was easier than learning X. Then Adobe decided to only allow rental! Buh bye Adobe! And for those
talking about all the CC upgrades….um FCP X ha been upgraded even MORE often……for free! And costs
about the same 6 months rental from Adobe.

I can’t stand subscriptions, so my way forward to a ‘familiar’ style editor is blocked. Because of
this, I have 3 NLEs on my computer FCP 7, CS6, and FCP X. I use them all, depending on
the project. Still am best when using FCP 7 as I just know how it ‘thinks’ and how everything
works in that suite of software. I have no plans to get rid of it anytime soon either.

Yes. FCP X works with FS100 footage as is. No transcoding needed. FCP 7 will need to transcode to ProRes using ‘Log and Transfer’.

  • If you want a ‘smart’ adapter that will allow you to adjust iris, you are not getting one for $50, end of story. The smart adapters cost from $240-$399. If you want a ‘dumb’ adapter, that is less than $50, sure, you can get one.

  • Well, that depends. If the post production software industry goes to ‘the cloud’, then I too am worried. Currently it’s just Adobe, and they still offer traditional licensing so no worries. The problem is when an entire industry goes to the ‘rent’ or ‘ongoing pay for service’ paradigm. Look at your cell service provider or cable provider for an example of the level of and speed of upgrades, innovations and service you will get in the event the whole industry goes to the cloud.

  • John,

Yes, you NEED ND filters. I bought a variable ND filter
    from Heliopan here:

    https://hedlerusa.com/viewitem.php?productid=340

They go out of stock QUICK as they are a VERY high quality
variable ND filter. I found out about them from reading
Philip Bloom’s blog and tried to order one. B&H and everyone
were out of stock and estimated time to get one on backorder
was 6-10 weeks. I just kept checking everywhere, until I found
them back in stock, and instantly ordered one. It is almost
a must have for the FS-100 in my opinion. BUT, you must
know what size lenses you have or might want to buy. I bought
the 77mm Heliopan, because it is the biggest one I could find
that they offered, and I can use step up rings for my 67mm lenses,
    but I am eyeing a 77mm 70-200 F2.8 lens…..and then it will work
for that lens as well. It is really good, has a smooth change
like a video camera iris ring, so you can dial in any amount of
ND, instead of just having 2 or 3 choices on a built in ND wheel
on most video cameras. They are still in stock so far, but they
go quick. If you don’t snag one, you can keep watching for them, or
grab the new Tiffin which was at NAB, and is also highly regarded.

  • Just for your info….

I figured it out. If you hit the button with two little sideways
triangles and a white dot over them (it’s called the white balance
‘one push’ button in the manual) you can use the scroll wheel to adjust
the color temperature WITHOUT digging into the menus…..in 100K steps.
What this means, is that if you hit that button, it automatically
displays the color temperature on the screen in preparation for you
to change it. So there’s your answer, press that button and it
will display the color temperature on screen…..one button push to
get the reading you want….pretty cool.
