¨Re: new Blackmagic products I would like to see
by Trevor Asquerthian on Aug 24, 2012 at 6:29:32 am“3) I just put in my first ATEM 2M/E today. The audio mixer is nice, but how will I really use it without a control surface. Mix 16 channels with a mouse ? A control surface with USB or Ethernet interface is critical to make this practical. ”
The neyrinck iPad app vControl could work potentially if the protocol were implemented. Although for a live show I wouldn’t be so sure.:)¨
I am not researched on what hooks up, but how about a Wacom tablet for the mouse?

How many hours / years before you replace a drive set? by, Shawn Larkin on Aug 8, 2012 at 2:23:46 pm
Is there a standard for when you swap out say 16 drives in a a rackmount?
We use an ATTO 380 RAID Card and a 2006 MacPro and 16 Hitachi Enterprise Class (Ultrastars) Drives that have been spinning for around 3 years / 26,280 hours now inside of a single enclosure (that sits in a rackmount). All 16 make up a single LUN / Volume.
Any words of wisdom? Thanks in advance. Two ways: 1. Use the “SMART software” methods above to digitally find data errors or strained, about to crash that everyone has advised above.
2. Contact the hard drives manufacturer to obtain a “connection extender sled” to hook up a hard drive getting tested at the time pushed outboard where you can reach it. Then, the manufacturer can tell you where to solder small brass or copper wire loops onto the circuit card so that an oscilloscope probe can test signal envelopes for actual magnetic playback (after the preamplifier) off the disc, as well as a few critical servo waveforms. This method is the most direct answer. Also make a few pickoff loops for the backplane and the cables from the power supply. (Old hard drives can be recycled, or sometimes rescued, by sending them to Drive Solutions in California). -
Get -big- ones and rotate sets of them just like you rotate your boots or shoes.

For the volume level you are about to encounter, any mono or stereo condenser microphone at all will pick up the performance masterfully. If the performance is indoors then removing the the windproof foam pill is a good idea (if you can still match indoor audio quality to outdoor audio quality in the mix). For now, just use a simple one.
If you eventually go to condenser or ribbon microphones that use injected power you will eventually figure out like I did that hooking up battery boxes that can handle really inconvenient microphone power like used in a Neumann U47 or Telefunken U87 is actually really cool.
If your recording machine has nearly hopeless hiss, hum, and low audio gain, of course the master level on your mixing board will help. Definitely use an oscilloscope to monitor if it is available. Fred Jodry

I just hope they aimed to be flexible enough of software, both OS and applications, so their users don`t lose their jobs.

My experience with the W.D. Caviar blacks is the same as the flat versions of the Maxtors: The ones that draw less than 600 milliamperes on the 5 volts (or 3.3 volts) power input as well as less than 600 milliamperes on the 12 volts power input, are the worthwile ones for performance and reliability. The high power ones roast. It also helps to keep good air- flow past the circuit card. If you can`t get your hands on good Hitachis or western Digitals at the time, try Fujis (maybe better than the W.D.s).

James, when you use an ad- blocker, all that “bandwidth” or “total data” still pours down the internet and modem into your computer, it`s that it gets blocked before it takes up display and sound. Most examples of it are temporarily stored on your memory sticks only, a reason for client- style computers to not fiddle around with 64 MB of memory anymore. Other examples though can be recorded to your hard drive or similar and may take up others ideas of business, not necessarily yours, and await a deleting click from you that doesn`t happen. Manually choosing for and against what comes to your door is a win, win, situation.

I understand your concerns Ron and didn’t mean to open up any old wounds. I was addressing Fred’s implication that the use of adblockers somehow opens the user up to trojans and other bad stuff let alone the loss of liberty. 🙂 -
I will second Ron on condemning AdBlocker and all the ad-blockers. If you ask a third party to run your computer`s business as far as the display is concerned, who knows how many advertisers innocent of abuse, advertisers who abuse, and trojans rolling by in your computer there will be, going by without the least attention or responsibility from you. “The price of liberty, and even common decency, is eternal vigilance.” -Aldous Huxley
