[Bill Davis] “… it HAS led to a general downtrend in the ratings for those TV shows.”

[Andrew Kimery] “Network TV ratings certainly have declined since the days of it just being NBC, ABC and CBS on air. Cable took out a bite.”

    Bill, Andrew,

Last I read broadcast viewership was still on the rise – at least that is the premise driving decisions at youtube. You have new info?

[Aindreas Gallagher] “apple … died the second they made a gold watch.”

    Aindreas,

Someone has to make retirement gifts.

[Bill Davis] “They actually allow the editor to mark and work with a stream of incoming content WHILE the files are actively growing?”

    Bill,

    Premiere Pro since CS6 (2012) I think. I haven’t used the feature.

I’m wondering how to interpret this:

“Known as “AXF Objects,” such containers can package, in different ways, all the specific information different kinds of systems would need in order to restore the content data.”

It is storing not just the data, but the things needed to recover the data … what are the implications for proprietary formats etc.?

  • It would be interesting to know how they’re managing this in conjunction with Avid Interplay.

[Andrew Kimery] “What does the cost of the tool have to do with how effective the tool performs”

    Andrew,

“How effective a tool performs” is one aspect of “the best tool”. Cost is another. “The best tool” is not defined solely in terms of how effectively it performs.

[Andrew Kimery] “I don’t get saying that they’ll never, ever use Tool ABC. Just seems like you are setting yourself up to either eat your words or to make a bad decision just to try and save face.”

Well, if you’re interested in David Mathis’ thinking on this, why not ask him?

[Andrew Kimery] ” It might play into which tool I can afford”…

    Andrew,

Affordability is definitely part of the question of best tool.

[Andrew Kimery] “Who says you have to use CC from now until the day you die? Why the assumption of a long term, monogamous relationship with your software (any software)?”

Different people have different needs. For some, questions of long term viability and access are important. That’s why ownership vs. rental might be important – it’s part of the question of how the tool is used, and the implications it has for future use.

[Andrew Kimery] ” No, but blanket statements about never using product X or Y unnecessarily limiting, IMO. Each situation is different and things change over time so I think keeping an open mind is the best policy.”

I think most people have an open mind to the scenario of Adobe changing their model. Things change over time and blanket statements are unnecessarily limiting.

Anyway it was Steve who mentioned someone “denying themselves” … I’m not sure who he was talking about or how open minded they are.

[Jeremy Garchow] “You can also do it in X, there’s nothing stopping you.”

    Jeremy,

This would be true if FCP X can handle hundreds of sequences per project.

Have you heard of such reports?

[Jeremy Garchow] “Because the FCP7 browser isn’t very good, this is a really easy way to group certain clips together and even though its’ probably not by “design” per sé, the FCP7 method supports this method very well (having multiple timelines open).”

    Jeremy,

Yes, if you’re using sequence-based editing only because the browser isn’t very good, as I have said elsewhere I feel FCP X is designed for browser-based editing and will probably prove a better match than FCP 7.

[Jeremy Garchow] “Also, with Audition clips, compound clips, secondary story lines, and connected clips, I find that I can store a lot more decisions in one single timeline than I do with other NLE’s.”

I’m aware of these functions and I like aspects of them. I’m not sure they would change much of the way I work though. (They didn’t in the one project I collaborated on in X.)

[Jeremy Garchow] “In X, I simply keep the current version open, and snapshot different versions for later retrieval. It doesn’t seem like a big difference, but in practice, it’s a huge difference in focus.”

I’m not familiar with the snapshot function in practice – is there a difference in terms of how you retrieve these to screen or recover all or part?

[James Ewart] ” Would it be nosey to enquire as to the genre of programme you are making?”

    James,

I try to do a range of different sorts of things; most work I would describe as unscripted non-fiction, long form. But, for example, I work the same way with scripted or performance material.
