I know its been a while but did you ever figure out what the culprit was?
I have a very powerful Windows machine with the same issue and my less powerful mac book pro is having no issues playing a very simple animation. -
I simply added a new pin and that was enough to reset the animation. Not sure if this is a new feature and was not available back when you posted.
A good rule of thumb in After Effects when you run into the problem of things not working after you make necessary unforeseen changes, and you are in to deep to start over, is simply to try to “force” the effect to recalculate. This could be by changing a parameter slightly, changing the seed, adding a point.. etc.
