I doubt those are independent TB controllers. Probably three at best. To be able to add four pci cards to it would add 1.800 bucks for expansion cases on top right from the get go – to get basic functionality you get for free with any other workstation – at higher speeds. And it’s a single cpu system. It’s cables and adapters on top of cables and adapters – plus probably issues with chaining order and what not. Also, much bigger and substantially cheaper Raid systems available via SAS. That won’t change. TB is and will remains a niche with a not so great adoption rate – so Apple does what they always do if they want you to use what they think you should use – force and bully you into using it by taking everything else away.
All this sacrifice for what – so it’s smaller. Unless, of course, you add all the additional boxes you’ll need. It’s a weird machine and a concept I’d never support or buy into.

[Steve Connor] “It’s a cylinder, there is no front or back”

With the power jack and the rest of the cables facing you… right.

The power button and head phone jack on the BACK is especially innovative.

What a silly remark. It’s a computer. Did I hurt your feelings. I am sooo sorry.

100 per cent fail on every level.
I am super happy we decided to leave Apple behind. It would be very, very tough to come up with something more compromised and stupid as a workstation replacement.

[Lance Moody] “Love seeing the naysayers (still lamenting their loss of floppies) and I am reminded of this quote:

“They have no taste. And I mean that in an important way.”

It’s supposed to be a workstation. Taste, design, looks – utterly irrelevant to me and a lot of people buying these types of machine. They are sitting under the desk or in a machine room. Sacrificing a ton of functionality for looks and design – what a marvelous idea.
Show me a construction company that chooses its excavator based on taste and looks.
    Ridiculous machine.

“Up to 12 cores” means it’s a single cpu machine. And the rest… fail.
Have fun rackmounting it. And I thought they couldn’t get any whackier but that thing… is… wow…
They really have lost it. Feel like cuddeling my HPs right now. So glad you’re there, buddy.

  • [Aindreas Gallagher] “Adobe want to force around, I don’t know – a half a million or more (?) working editing professionals into this living hell over the next 24 months.

I swear to god – does any editor feel good about this at this stage? reading the above?
Forget the cloud – this isn’t about any cloud. This is just turning into a nightmarish mess.”

Man, don’t you think you blow it all a bit out of proportion?

That would always be my first suggestion. Install all the trials, have a go at all of them and see what app suits your workflow and expectations best.
For me, I just want a timeline that flies, no delays, no stuttering, great trim tools, no beachballs or waiting cursors. It has to go through the footage like butter, no matter what the source codec, size, framerate, filter applied. Especially with IO since I just want and need to watch whatever I do (also with AE) on a broadcast monitor. And when I go at 32x speed to fly through material (which Edius can do) I also want as little latency on my external monitor as possible. The only NLEs that do all that is Edius and, at least with native media, Final Cut Classic Media Composer. FCPX and Premiere CS6 are terrible in that respect.
Maybe I’ll do a little youtube vid comparing timeline behavior under heavy load of all those apps. The results are quite impressive and there is a clear winner.

XML import only, but AAF worked fine for me.
