Throwing in my 5 cents:
Bru PE is a very reliable app, there are some minor oddities when you run it via the GUI but no deal breakers there. The biggest problem of Bru is that it’s Mac and Linux only.
That’s also the main reason why we’ve been looking deeper into LTFS as we wanted a small, dedicated machine sitting in the machine room doing nothing but writing to and from tape which anyone, even without Terminal knowledge, can operate. We also wanted something that wasn’t tied to any specific backup software or platform. Now that HP has it LTFS libraries ready for windows we started doing all our backups on LTFS on a 300 dollar pc rather than going with a Macpro or a Mini with a 1.000 dollar TB breakout box.
So far, we’re happy with LTFS. Again, it’s early days, there some quirks with HP’s implementation in it’s current 2.0 flavour, but nothing major so my suggestion would be to give it a try.——

[Craig Seeman] “Sony
a trail of dead formats including D2 and BetaSX
“D2 is on the Ampex Graveyard, Sony wasn’t the responsible party.
While Sony has left some dead formats behind, those were formats that didn’t really get wide market acceptance. Those who did, Sony supports extremely well. You can even play back Digibeta in an HDCAM-SR deck today.
As for the rest (Avid), you could argue like that. Question is: did they get punished for that behaviour. And yep, Avid got it pretty badly.
Apple hardly ever gets any serious lashes from its customer base and that is the problem. People play along and make due especially hardware wise because there is no alternative unless you want to switch platforms.
Each and everyone has to decide if that’s the way they want to play that game, now and in the future.——

January 29, 2013 at 8:03 pm in reply to: Larry Jordan blogs on “is FCPX ready for Pro use” and “Will there be a new Mac Pro”[Bill Davis] “I’m comfortable as an X editor – just as Larry is. I don’t have any reason to try to learn or support multiple editing platforms (which he clearly does) since I don’t have a business model that requires that. “
And you prevent your business from diversifying or getting new clients who may require just that because your tool of choice and toolset isn’t suitable.

January 16, 2013 at 6:17 pm in reply to: Latest Rumors on Apple product line-up and releaseI wonder why people are riding the Xeon and Xeon chipset train. Given what most people think the new box might be (if there is any) there is very little a xeon will provide that is of any advantage compared to an i7. Performance wise, there is very little difference. Xeons can even be used in certain desktop motherboards for the i7 1155 socket.
Dual CPUs are out of the question if the current form factor is supposed to be changed drastically. You simply cannot cool dual xeons in a much smaller enclosure (unless you go with server fans at full whack.)
– Xeon chipsets can hold more ram which is not that relevant because apple will superglue the thing down so you can’t get to it anyway. That plus it’s unlikely most folks here are going beyond 48gigs of ram. Memory is registered and has error correction but that, too, isn’t really that relevant here.
– More sata ports with raid capabilities which is irelevant because a) see point above and b) everybody predicts there will be limited to no internal expansion so the ports would be wasted anway
– More and faster pcie slots which is ireleavant because a) see two points above and b) everybody predicts pcie for expansion is not Apple’s idea of how stuff should be connected so let’s just get rid of it and buy expensive external thunderbolt boxes.
Leaves GPU and there is not difference between graphics that can be used with an i7 or a Xeon.

Edius 6.5 is relevant also for pure Apple folks since the HQX codex now is also cross platform and can be used on Macs.
Unlike any other alternative, it is free, quality wise on-par with Prores and beyond, encode and decode on both PCs and Macs and it can handle SD, HD up to 4k and isn’t tied to a specific container. It can be avi, mxf or QT.
There are tons of other great things in 6.5 and we are using it as our main editor now. It’s the closest thing to what a FCP 8 classic could have been, imo even moreso than Premiere, so it could and should be of interest to people here.——

The internal setup looks a bit like those found in Norco cases. They are equally priced, do the job just fine, but they are loud. They keep the drives very cool but they are really built to be rack mounted in machine and server rooms, not for sitting on your desktop. 12 drives generate quite a bit of heat and server grade fans can be super loud so be aware.
You know that you will need a raid card to use this, right? That box alone won’t do anything. The raid card is really where it’s at, also with regard to what drives being used etc.
Go with an Areca card and Hitachi drives, see if that case is suitable for your purpose noise wise. Otherwise consider maybe an 8-drive enclosure which was actually designed for desktop usage (Areca, Proavio etc.). Performance wise, they’ll all do what you need it for… and beyond.——

December 4, 2012 at 11:27 pm in reply to: Can’t layoff 23.98 1080sf using FCP7, AJA Kona LHi and Sony SRW-5800I have used the very same setup plenty of times without any issues. It’s hard to determine what the issue might be without knowing the specific settings in either the Kona control panel, the deck and/or FCP7
Do you get an image on the SRW front panel display? What happens when you use Aja’s VTR exchange? I’d start there so you can narrow down what the culprit might be.
I assume you have set the SRW to 23.98fps 4:2:2 mode, right?——

If of course this is the one you are talking about :-)”It’s not on the list (It’s the card with the GT extionsion, it’s a PCe3 8x card) and it doesn’t work.

December 3, 2012 at 2:48 am in reply to: I think the time of the large tower are coming to an end – and the bloated software suits with it 🙂It’s not just about speed, it’s also about compatibility. Atto’s latest adapters (ExpressSAS H6F0 GT) won’t even work in a 4x slot anymore, it needs 8x.
Other cards will follow, it is just a question of time.[Jeremy Garchow] “And besides GPU, right now, 4x is pretty good.
You can capture 1080p60 video over Thunderbolt and have the drive speed to do so.
Right now, 4x gets a “bad rap” in it’s supposed incompetence, but right now, 4x is pretty damn fast.
For broadcast work, it’s plenty.”

What’s most interesting to me is, again, the misconception that 64bit automatically equals faster in people’s minds. It just doesn’t. It has the potential but if the code doesn’t deliver it can be as slow or even slower than 32bit.
