David, are you saying that if I get a Mac with “One 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” processor” that this is the only processor this Mac will ever have? that I will not be able to upgrade it (in the same Mac) in 3 years when the 2.8 will be nothing compared to the newest models?
And if so, do any other parts of the Mac come this way?
Thanks.

Hi Nigel,
What is clock speed?? And what exactly is a “core”?And by internal drive, do you mean the hard-drive, as in memory?
And what is SSD?
Pardon the amateur questions, but this is great for me. Thanks

David, thanks for your answer. This is a big surprise. Can you elaborate please? I can purchase a Mac with one or two processors. Why can’t I get one and add a second later? Isn’t it the same as adding any other piece of hardware?

November 8, 2010 at 2:00 pm in reply to: follow-up to Vegasvs FCP (wondering about QUALITY)John, Erik, and Dave — THANK YOU!
And yes, Erik, lots of text in this thread, very fortunately.
Asking about one thing, I learned a lot that now I know I can’t do without. If you guys — and everyone else who can contribute — think there are some other very important things that I, as a beginner, should know about and should learn more about, such as calibration, please let me know when you can.
Thanks guys. One of the things I learned from this thread that excites me, is that post is a LOT more technical than just having an editing system and being good with it. Aside from opening up my eyes, this thread has given me courage. But I still wanna fall in love with “my editor” and that decision has been made 🙂

November 7, 2010 at 4:12 pm in reply to: follow-up to Vegasvs FCP (wondering about QUALITY)The Huey Pro also acts as a light sensor in the room when not used for calibration, so it can dynamically adjust your color profile based on changing room light conditions.
Dave, can you please tell me more about how the Huey Pro also acts as a light sensor. I’m not sure I understand what this means. Why would the room’s light condition have any effect on the outcome of your work?

November 7, 2010 at 3:43 pm in reply to: follow-up to Vegasvs FCP (wondering about QUALITY)Erik, it seems to me that you do the type of professional work that would be done on a feature film. So what do you mean by “it all depends on what you do of course?” If the work you do is the type of work that would be done on a feature, then for what type of work would you choose Avid for?
The reason I ask is because you made a good case for FCP, and I’m wondering what kind of work you would switch to Avid for. (I guess I’m also trying to figure out why Avid is multiple times the cost of other NLEs.

November 7, 2010 at 4:23 am in reply to: follow-up to Vegasvs FCP (wondering about QUALITY)John, thanks a lot. I Googled Spyder 3 and checked out an image. And with what you’re saying I have a pretty good understanding of what it is, am happy to know about it, and am looking forward to getting it. Thanks again man.

November 6, 2010 at 11:32 pm in reply to: follow-up to Vegasvs FCP (wondering about QUALITY)Erik, to backtrack a bit, I have a question regarding a comment you made earlier. After sharing a lot with me about FCP and post, you said that “FCP is my editor”. Considering that you jump from software to software, I assume that you have the option of having Avid be your editor. Would you say that you choose FCP over Avid?
Also guys, a lot is being said about calibration. And I’m glad because this is totally new to me and seems to be very important. A comment was even made that HDTVs should be calibrated. Can someone please tell me what is calibration, and in general how would one go about calibrating a Mac monitor, a PC monitor, and an HDTV. Thanks all.
