The question is what you need, and how quick you do need that. I think Boris has some plans for Media 100, and I would not be too surprised to hear some news from them soon. So if you have some time, I would suggest waiting till NAB to see what they will come up with.
Right now Media 100 sw could be a good addition to your workflow. Although it has no video I/O right now it is a good editing platform with many features, and on a newer computer it is quite fast. Maybe you should download the trial version from borisfx.com. -

some things you should know:
– you need an Expansion Chassis to run Media 100 i on a G5. Usually an old Magma or SBS does work; all our old chassis from the G3 days worked nicely with G5s and Media 100 i, but you cannot put the P6000 board directly into a G5. For uncompressed 10bit HD do RAID 50. Set up each channel as RAID 5 and stripe the two partitions together using RAID0. If you want you can partition the RAID50 volume with StorDirector.

When you create a new Bin or Timeline you need to save them somewhere. I would suggest copying the bins and timelines (wherever you have stored them) also to your FireWire drive. But yes, media files that are copied to a FireWire drive and back will relink to your timeline. If they do not relink automatically use the “Relink Media” command in the “Media” menu. Media 100 will search and relink to your media files.

Then I would suggest getting either a cheap FireWire or internal HD and to clone the boot drive to the new drive (e.g. using CCC). Then install 10.4 and tell us if it works…

As far as I can remember V8.1 does not run with 10.3.x properly, so I would guess that it does not run with 10.4 without problems. I would suggest updating to V8.2 (currently there is a promo that will also give you the XR software features for a relatively cheap update price).
