yeah. I’ve used wifi but I’m not very knowledge about the technology that goes into it. I thought there may be a different implementations of it.

But I get what you’re saying: performance depends on conditions.

I’m assuming that dedicated decoders follow the same WiFi rules?

Just to explain: What I’m planning on doing is hooking up the decoders to an Atem TV Studio from Blackmagic-design and running that into wirecast via sdi to firewire conversion.
But if I can stream directly to the laptop, it’s a nice option to have. Then I’ll just record the high quality footage onto the camera cards in case I need a HQ master.

Hi Craig. Thanx for the reply.
So in theory it is possible but Cube needs line of site to the laptop…

    wow…

After reading a few articles on the Cow I decided to try setting up something myself, before buying new hardware, and so far it works really well:

I have two imacs connected to the built-in Ethernet ports of a Macpro. One imac is used as a capture/viewing station (mainly DV, HDV and some XDcam) and the other imac is an edit station and the Macpro doubles as server/edit station.

File Sharing is switched on in the Macpro, but everything else is set to automatic in the network settings. The Macpro has a 4 terabyte Caldigit Element connected to it which is used as shared storage.

We’re getting speeds of 104 Mb/s per channel according to Blackmagic Speed Test, and something like 55 Mb/s according to HD speed test. We’re simultaneously editing 4 or 5 streams of DV/HDV footage on each of the two edit stations while capturing on the third, so it’s not too bad. No dropped frames in the past 2 weeks.

Granted, I will eventually buy the small-tree card and switch, a dedicated server and a faster shared storage unit, but you can test the setup without them.

    regards.

    Is there a Prores 2K???

As for firewire 800, it’s not the best but it’s pretty good. I sometimes edit HD Prores and XDCAM HD on a laptop using a CaldigitVR and a G-raid2. I use firewire 800 for both. I get realtime playback until I start getting into 3 or more layers.

If you end up trying the Hub please let us know if it works. You could also try posting a query in the matrox forum… https://forums.creativecow.net/forum/matroxvideosystems

March 2, 2009 at 8:55 pm in reply to: Editing HD for SD broadcast

    Hi,

I’m going through this work flow right now.

What I’ve been doing is editing the XDcam natively, including scaling and coloring and so on. I then render in a Prores HD timeline and export the sequence as a self contained quicktime movie.

I then take this movie to compressor and convert it to 10-bit uncompressed Pal. I put this movie into a new timeline, add titles and creits then lay off to digi-beta.

So far, the results are great.

I have a Blackmagic Multibridge extreme, but the downconverts with it are softer than using compressor, and in any case, I don’t like adding titles until I reach my final sequence.

actually, according to Matrox the MXO2 can capture SD Prores.
Matrox also says you can use the MXO2 for accurate color on cheaper HDMI LCD screens.

That isn’t to say that the AJA IO HD isn’t great, but along with a proper broadcast monitor it will cost several thousand dollars more than the MXO2.

Actually, I’m in the process of trying to decide which of the two to buy! Tough decision.

ps… I think FCP 6.01 wasn’t very stable to begin with, so if you can upgrade (free download) to 6.03-6.05 that’s probably a good idea.

How come it needs to render all the time? Is your sequence setting the same as the clip?

That’s happened to me a few times when I used certain effects on 6 and 6.01. Unfortunately I can’t remember which plug-ins were causing the problem. Are you using plug-ins? You mentioned rendering so I assumed you may be.
