It’s not just 3D in After Effects, H264 encoding in Sorenson Squeeze and I know people where iffy about anything but CUDA for 3D-rendering in other apps (Maya perhaps).
But yes, open technologies like OpenCL / OpenGL is highly preferred!

There is no doubt though that the GPU’s have power. It’s however been an issue with OpenCL vs CUDA in the past. Hope this changes!

From the given specs it sounds like two high end or even next-gen GPUs. Seems we’re stuck with single CPU-systems though, no?

I do find their discussion regarding the Retina MacBook Pro a bit… Confusing. Seeing they are I’d think quite “qualified” a discussing these things I find it odd they praise a machine with-out a dedicated GPU. Fine, for some even the integrated HD4000 / 4600 might do but with retina resolutions even 2D-graphics are an issue. Later they go in and talk about a possible 4K desktop-screen but hesitate as they might not be suited for the MacBook Pro’s GPU…
To sum it up they want high res, high performance with out the need of a dedicated GPU which today isn’t happening. Even the top of the line “Iris” GPU Is beaten by the 18 months old GTX 650M. I really hope Apple doesn’t nuter this machine in this fashion.
Regarding the MacPro they don’t really bring up that much news given it’s quite a sane discussion.

IMO OSX and FCPX with it should have more of an “understanding” of all the files in the system. Spotlight indexes everything so a FCPX project should instantly be able to find a clip based on name and meta-data. At the rare occasion of duplicate clips it could ask what file to use.
I’m quite amazed this hasn’t happened. It was one of the first things I thought would happen with the introduction of Spotlight almost 10 years ago.
Adobe products are equally “stupid” in this regard.

Sadly a lot of “tech” is coming later this year. Thunderbolt 2 and Xeon’s based on IvyBridge. SATA Express I also think isn’t to far off but that’s probably 2014 or 2015. Then we have 4K monitors on the horizon also.

The 2012 iMac release was a fiasco. Announced in October to be released in November – most people had to wait 2 or more months for their systems even when they ordered them after the new year.
Announcing early isn’t a bad thing though. You just have to keep your schedule and you shouldn’t remove the excisting product from the market beforehand.

There most defiantly is. But it’s a machine that would be comparable to a windows machine a lot more 1:1. The high-end iMac is a very pricey machine for the hardware you get, the MacPro even more so.

Also, GPU-performance on Windows or other systems is highly relevant as you get more perspective on how a chip can perform. For example it pretty clear there is some kind of driver issue if a 680MX beats a 680 desktop in for example Motion. That’s clearly driver optimizations done to one chip an not the other.

It depends on why you want a so called “motherboard GPU”. I’d be surprised if a mobile chip is cheaper than a desktop chip. I also think as mentioned they will still use a PCIe slot (given you can’t replace it) so why not have it user replaceable? The only win is a slimmer system.

Look at that. A GTX690 desktop is 2X faster than a 680MX, a 680 desktop is around 50% faster at AE / CUDA rendering.
I respect you don’t play games but this is also a place where the “desktop Mac” would fit in. The GTX 680MX iMac is decent but there is huge impact jumping from 1080p to 1440p in performance. Apps can reflect this as well.
Also as far as I understand Barefeats Resolve test isn’t optimal for GPU-stressing.
