June 22, 2011 at 5:53 pm in reply to: Remember when Apple dropped floppy drives?

Actually I do and it was a pain in the ass. I had to start emailing myself EDL’s (CMX3600 and the like) to another computer so I could put them on a floppy to get them into an online bays edit computer which could not be networked.

This is not the same thing with FCP X, convenience like an old floppy is one thing, it is like moving to firewire, you buy a new piece of gear or transition to a new media type no big deal, it is expected.

Fundamentally removing functionality, not making it backward compatible is completely different. It is a tool that peoples livelihood and business rests on,it is not a plaything or a hobby. If they cannot do their job with it, the tool is no longer useful. I feel that unless they treat this like a public beta release and very quickly add back true professional functions, It will not last long in the professional broadcast arena. Heck, no cinema tools to you cannot even use it for films anymore.

Lets see how may Post Houses go back to Avid or Premiere in the next 12 months.

    Hi Bob,

I know this is a little OT for this forum but I would love your take on discontinuing FCSvr, in a SAN environment, or any file based workflow you need to track assets. Nothing on the market can fill this niche at the price point that FCSvr was at that I can see.

I know I am poking a bear with a sharp stick but you always have genuine insight.

    thanks,

    Erik

Your right Bob, sometimes I forget, but I would never trust my media to something unproven, penny wise, pound foolish in my opinion.

I agree Bob, seriously to is just a database management issue, but it is not in Avid’s best interest to give it away, I even tried to pay them for it at one job (so we could use our non Avid SAN) and they would not do it. It goes without saying that both Facilis and Editshare are up here in Boston with Avid, and made up of many former Avid employees who helped develop Unity, etc, they have very experienced engineers developing this.

As far as the open source solution on source forge, until I see it work in a mission critical environment, I would not trust it with my media.

April 11, 2011 at 3:17 pm in reply to: SD, HD, Title Safe and Center Cut Question

    Yes,

Protect for center cut title safe SD, very few broadcasters will show letterboxed SD content.

It does constrain the creative use of the canvas, and looks a little silly in HD. Look at any of the network morning shows like Today/GMA , or sports, they have a huge bar graphic going to the edge of HD 16:9 with the text way in the center in 4:3 safe.

But it will save lots of headaches from stations QA department kicking stuff back, or worse them getting calls from viewers “why are the titles cut off”.

    Check out Cache-A https://cache-a.com/

While there is some upfront Capital cost, the LTO-5 tapes themselves are huge bang for your Terabyte (~$70 per 1.5 TB cassette, and will get cheaper fast). LTO is shelf stable for 30 years, and Cache-A has a very cool features and can sit on your network like a NAS.

January 18, 2011 at 4:21 pm in reply to: Bad news day for Apple users?

I always hoped Apple would spin off a Pro Apps division into its own company like they did with Filemaker. It makes sense from a financial and support point of view and keeps the Apple brand loyalty. Figure a small agile group focusing on Server networks, high end creative applications. Low overhead, higher customer service, and built in loyalty, sounds like a winner to me.

Leave Apple to focus its work on consumer magic with iwhatever, and consumer electronics; that is where they make their money. But the cutting edge development from the pro apps could trickle down and they can keep the resources and IP in house, just as a separate company.

January 11, 2011 at 4:10 pm in reply to: encoding speed

Real time encoding (or even faster than real time) is possible with enough horsepower and memory. Most use a render farm of some kind to achieve this performance. It is not a limitation of the software (in most cases), it is a hardware solution. There are pro systems that use “grid” encoding which slices up the media into smaller segments to achieve truly great performance, but I do not believe FFMPEG can do this.

I do not know if you can set up FFMPEG as a distributed system that can take advantage of a render farm. like Qmaster with Compressor or if you can via software optimize system utilization (ie use 64-bit, multicores, extra memory)

I would be interested in seeing what others have to say.
