I had no clue they could be re-ordered. Thanks!

    Thanks Paul.

I did end up getting the files back using a software called Zero Assumption Recovery. I’m pretty sure it was a problem with the computer’s built-in card reader. The laptop itself has since been replaced and no issues so far!

Thanks for your response Bill. I have been formatting all cards in-camera, not using my PC for anything except unloading footage.

Hi Ann, I’ve used multiple Sony cards so I don’t think it’s the card itself.

This doesn’t help, but I ended up just copy-and-pasting over the offline media files in the XML document.

I would never use FCP for appropriate audio editing, but he had some effects for high pass filters and such, things specific to the shots and like you said, I don’t have the video, so I wanted to make sure the filters are in the appropriate place.

getting proper media from the editor seems out of the question at this point, unfortunately. I just can’t get into contact with him, my director had to fly across the country to get a response from him….just hardly worth it at this point.

so i have a DVD of the rough cut the director gave me. i think i might rip that and use that as a reference video/audio and base the audio editing in Audition off the audio from the dvd.

thanks for the insight. the problem is there are 6 different OMF files, all with different lengths and timecodes and such, and they only seem to be lined up in the XML file. Though I guess I can try to match them?

I wouldn’t want to use FCP for audio editing, but if it was going to expedite the process I figured I could suck it up just this once, especially since the editor already did some audio editing in FCP. Unfortunately there is not a way to open or cross reference any of the audio effects in Adobe Audition.

perhaps. i’ll have to see if there are any accessible pro tools stations nearby. Audition turns all the files into AIF but then they don’t have the FCP effects on them. very frustrating.

well, i feel quite foolish. i didn’t realize he sent me an XML file. my bad.

follow up question, is there any way to get the effects to work? he did the initial audio editing in fcp7 and upon opening the XML, Audition told me that 15/19 effects didn’t transfer. any way to fix that?

I’m no expert by any stretch, but here’s what i can recommend?

Computers will typically need an interface of some kind to capture audio, preferably FireWire if you have the money for it. Through the interface, Audition will be able to record directly to the disk(s).

You can also look into digital recorders, like the Zoom H4n, which have inputs and are able to capture audio and use their memory to transfer the recorded audio to the computer. Hopefully that helps.
