May I ask one more question of you…

I’m unfortunately very backed up with the editing, so the projects I’ve been filming with the NX5Us I’m just now starting to edit and send to clients.

Have you had any negative feedback from your clients if they notice the noise? I’m wondering how noticable it will be to an average end client. And what about broadcast? I do do a few TV spots and I’m almost hesitant to do them with these cameras. I’m sure that people will see the HD on television and expect their weddings, etc to look the same because they don’t know that there’s differences between cameras and chips. Have they noticed and do you simply tell them that the cameras are limited (compared to tv broadcast cameras)?

    Thanks again,
    Eric

John and Michael, thank you both for your feedback. VERY helpful and hopefully informative to all following this thread.

I will try to keep my NX5U in -3 or -6db and see how that helps. But as you probably know, that’s nearly impossible for wedding shooting which is a big portion of our business.

The best thing for me is simply knowing that yes this is normal and it’s just the limitations of the camera. John, you might remember a few months ago when I first started really using these cameras you and I corresponded in a few threads as I was struggling with the transition. This image noise has been taxing on me for months, but now a weight has been lifted off of my shoulder simply in knowing that this is normal for this price range of camera, as I stated above.

I am, however, going to seriously consider selling these two almost brand new NX5Us and biting the bullet to invest in 1/2″ or 2/3″ cameras.

    Thank you very much!

Thanks Michael. I do have one of my gain settings set to -6db, I just have to get into the habit of using it and see if I notice any improvements.

For anyone following this thread please look at https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/298/650 and give us your input and thoughts regarding image quality of these and similar HD cameras.

    Thanks,
    Eric

Thanks for sharing the info Michael. Not sure that I noticed any difference, but I’ve turned it off just in case. I do have other issues with image quality but I will save that for a post I’ve already started on that topic.

FYI, my disappointment with image quality is how grainy the image is. Significantly worse the darker the image, but even in broad daylight I see a lot of noise in the picture.

    Thanks again,

Thank you Michael. Ironically, I just performed a media dump on this card. I filmed one event on the card after the media dump which is still on the card, and in which all the files are good.

I had forgotten about the clip repair function. I haven’t tried it yet but will soon.

Reading the user manual is great, but it’s like learning a second language. You can be told what the words are, but if you don’t use them then you forget them. It’s hard to remember everything in a manual so that’s why it’s nice to have great people like yourself on forums like these to help us all along.

    Thank you everybody.

Hmmm. Not sure I can help much more unfortunately. I’m pretty sure my SD files did not need rendered, and they certainly had audio!

    Can anybody else assist?

Thanks for the advice John, you’re always very helpful.

May I ask what is a “binary editor”? Not sure what you mean. I’d love to follow you’re instructions 1-6 but I must admit I’m a little lost.

Hmmm, I thought a lot of people were recommending using MPEG Streamclip with the NX5U (hence, AVCHD). But then again, as we were just talking about in another post if you shoot in SD then the files aren’t AVCHD so maybe that’s what I’m thinking of.

Martin, and those following, I’ve seen those exact words too, but I shot a few events in SD when I first got my NX5Us and I can totally work with the footage in FCP, but admittedly there are some issues.

Take that for what it’s worth, maybe nothing more than not all hope is lost, but definitely just go HD from now on if possible.

Tony, I’m hoping somebody else will chime in here soon with more details, but if I remember correctly you do not use the Log & Transfer window with SD footage – only HD.

So that should give you some hope! With that said, I can’t remember the exact workflow for SD footage, but I think you can just import the mpeg files as you would any other files (Command I).

A word of caution for the future, it is my experience both hands on and from online research as well as this CreativeCow forum that Final Cut Pro does not like SD footage from digital SD cameras (cards). I know I had some big issues when I first started using the NX5U in SD mode with FCP 7. So much so that I shoot everything in HD now, even if the final product is regular SD DVD. Just a word of advice.

Try importing the clips the regular way first and check back to see if anybody else gave better directions.
