One more thing…The assets they sent me are still in my hands. I still have not heard back from them. I guess I should just wait a little while. At what point should I contact them and say – “hello…I have your content here”?

My actual quote for the job was 10X was they were offering. I politely wrote him back and stated exactly what needed to be done and why and gave him the quote. I haven’t heard back. 🙂

Sound advice. I do want to to offer some HD DVD services in the future to this client so I didn’t really wanted to alienate them. I guess I shouldn’t feel I’m being a jerk for not taking what they offer but I do sometimes.

Without knowing what your piece looks like, I would say “no”.
First there have been some issues with Encore. Go the the forums and check it out. Second, not all BD players will play a BD-R so makes sure it works before you invest. Third – since you going to BD, you will have to compress your beautiful footage to MPEG2. Its a much higher bitrate but it’s still compressed. If I were you I’d play back from a deck or straight from the timeline.

The resolution won’t be that good – but its all relative on who’s watching it. Your compressing your video twice. Compressor should do this for you but there are several other conversion tools available as well

Not sure how BD spec compliant your MPEG is out of the camera. You’ll have to get a BD authoring tool and check it out.

There are no burners available for HD DVD but you can author to a DVD-r red laser media. They play fine for me out of DVDSP but I had to do much testing to see what recipe worked.
There is alot more info over at the Apple discussion sites if you’d like to check that out.
As far as authoring a HD DVD like the ones you buy in stores,(pop up menus, picture in picture, ect) thats a different story. DVDSP does not author advanced content titles yet.

Why are you going to H264 before encoding to MPEG2? Yur making an extra step which is not needed or desirable. Just encode directly from the timeline using compressor to MPEG2. How large is the file? How long is the timeline.

This is done with layered menus in DVDSP. However, I don’t believe you can mix layered menus and standard overlay menus in DVDSP. Layered menus should be avoided in my opinion. Each layer is treated as its own separate menu so the players laser must stop and refocus every time you go from button to button.
Slow navigation and faulty software player performance is normal. I scene several settops player fail with layered menus as well.
