  • Thanks for the quick response Bill. I’m in list view and I’m trying to sort by clip name as opposed to creation date. When I sort by name, it still splits the result by creation date (each day with its own disclosure triangle). I’m looking to get one uninterrupted smart collection sorted by name.

I’ve been strictly an Avid user for non-linear since moving from an A/B BetaSP setup in the mid 90’s. Premiere and FCP, while both very capable, never had enough differentiation to make me seriously consider switching. With FCPX and Premiere CStheNext (combined with Avid’s inability to advance their software in the areas I need them to), I really see the possibility of using two or possibly even three editing applications – and playing each to their own strengths.

The really great thing is that I bought the MC7 upgrade (from v6.0) for $299, FCPX for $299 and a Cloud subscription for $360+tax (for this year at least…) That’s $1k for three really great applications for a maybe a year’s time. I added a decklink card for FCPX and Premiere output as well as Resolve (the free version for now).

Like many people here, I’ve had a love/hate relationship with the three A’s, but really it’s a pretty amazing and economical time to be involved in post.

Now whether the economical part of it is a good thing or not is another topic entirely… 🙂

    Thanks Peter,

Yes, I saw and followed the directions in that PDF several times, although I may have missed something. I ended up using Automatic Duck which worked perfect. Thanks again for the response… still waiting to hear back from Boris support.

I’m with Shane on this development. If the hardware works with MC, FCP (and PP for that matter) then it’s easy to switch between applications depending on the project’s or client’s needs. And with the relatively low pricing of the NLEs, it’s not too much of a stretch for most shops to own all three.

I’ve been on Avid since ’97 and have only spent a couple days worth of time on FCP, but that wouldn’t keep me from using it if the next release is “awesome” – especially if I could use both on the same $1,000 piece of hardware without dual boots and rewiring I/Os.

FWIW, there’s a lot of grumbling in the Avid camp too. There’s some new functionality in MC5/5.5 that many longtime users hate. The Avid fanboys are also waiting for the magical 64bit release, and based on the release of MC5.5 yesterday, we’ll probably be waiting longer than the FCP camp.

So, as they say, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence!

Thanks for the responses. I searched for posts on the HP, but I definitely missed that one. I did see some of Walter’s posts about the R380 from a couple years back – glad they’ve worked out so well.

I think I’ll go with my gut and show some customer loyalty on this one.
