Personally, i would test the hell out of that setup before going with it. I’ve spoken with a few other SAN installers and none of our small group has really put a Mac Mini with TB adapters to the test. We don’t know if there’s enough bandwidth to support disc IOs and ethernet. AND you want to use it for ingest. might be a bit much for the Mac Mini bus. but i don’t know…
you’ll definitely be pushing it. and you’ll be on your own. I would try it (hoping to soon). But I’ve been told I’m nuts by quite a few people in this industry.
not sure i would use the RS16 in the field either, if you’re trying to save space with a Mac Mini. The RS16 is still a big deep rack mount RAID.

Like people say elsewhere on this forum, it’s all about the support. I have two RS16 RAIDs and they’re awesome. but i’ve learned a lot over the years and support them myself. Would I recommend someone else do that? No. But if your reseller is making themselves available for that, then I say go for it. If there’s no support, then don’t do it. You will tear your hair out.
I just run mine with AFP. No need for MetaLAN in my install. I assume that you know that the RS16 is only a RAID. You still need a server, cards, etc.

barefeats.com (Mac only though) runs app-specific tests on a range of cards. which is helpful because some cards are stronger in certain areas than others.
they run a Resolve test, but it would be nice if they used the Standard Candle instead of their own singular test.

Mac’s can auto-negotiate ethernet connections, so you don’t need a crossover cable.

theoretically, you should be able to use this app to remap any keyboard command to any controller, not just the Wave. i’m gonna give this a shot.

isn’t the GUI card usually listed in System Overview, along with GPUs and Rockets? i’m currently on a single card system, so i can’t check.

I just installed a Red Rocket in a similar system (but with a GTX 580 card as GUI/GPU). i get 15-20fps with no nodes on 5k footage in a 1080 timeline.
Changing the playback quality doesn’t make much of a difference like it would if you have no Rocket card. The card is handling all that, but still leaving Resolve with 4-5k pixels to chunk through. You need more GPU power.

I don’t believe it’s an Ethernet vs Fibre thing. i think what you’re seeing is RAID’s designed for large video files with a large block size, versus drives designed for things like databases, with a small block size. if you copy lots of tiny files to a file system with a large block size (your SAN RAIDs), it will seem like it’s taking forever. but if you copied them to something designed for a ton of small reads/writes, like a server hosting a website, then it will go much faster.
can someone else chime in and confirm? it’s been awhile since i’ve dealt with block sizes.

looks like i missed this thread.
you got it to work in your own experiment with your laptop. that’s pretty much the config, minus a few tweaks. that’s how i got into this business. but there’s 4 issues:
1. Scalability – the method you’re using can’t scale
2. Latency – your setup will have EXTREME latency on the storage side. speeds aren’t the concern here. it’s low latency for multiple IOs
3. Support – if you built it and get it to work, who do you call when it goes down? For Mac-based stuff, you can get a little help on this forum. But for anything on the Windows side, you’re on your own.
4. R&D – these companies are constantly putting money into R&D to improve their current and future products. These are the little tweaks I’m talking about, hardware and software. You don’t have that kind of time.i used to build these DIY systems for clients, and now I don’t anymore. Instead leaning on the companies listed here.

an expansion chassis for GPUs over current Thunderbolt tech wouldn’t work too well because Thunderbolt is a 4x PCIe connection. Each GPU is 16x. Even the PCIe expansion chassis’s are a compromise because the most common config – four 16x slots; is still sharing four 16x GPU cards over a single 16x PCIe connection to the computer.
