First of all, I appreciate the response. And you are right. I’ve used 29.97 for a few boards in Times Square, but I still have the same problem. They need progressive video (non-interlaced) and I still have the same issue to where every 4 frames are unique, then the next 2 are duplicates…and so on.
Is my solution to use Twixtor for this?

Thanks for the suggestion, but that did not work at all. If you save it in a RTF format it crashes Final Cut. Can you give me more specifics? I’m using Dreamweaver to do the find and replace so that two spaces become one line break. That is because of the export bug that Final Cut 7 has.
Any advice?

Yeah while I mostly agree with what you are saying, my client just explained this further. I think this is going to be needed somewhere. Also I’m not making this as a subtitle for a DVD etc…it’s for online distribution only so there’s no way for you to select subtitles for English or Japanese, they are just rendered with the movie.
So take this for example. The interviewee says the english words “naked eyes”…this apparently has no easy translation into Japanese or at least would be very odd to a Japanese person without having a definition.
I’m think I have to treat it like a footnote, or a brief definition of the word. I’m leaning towards adding an italic subtitle with only Japanese below the English subtitles. That way it’s separate from the English subtitles that the typical Japanese person is going to ignore (totally agree with that comment).
Does that make sense?

Thanks for the reply but I don’t think you understand where I’m going with this.
It’s the word music, not English just to clarify. Here’s the issue. If you are a Japanese person that DOES NOT speak English and you are watching the video, when the Japanese person on camera mixes English words with Japanese it might get confusing. So the interviewee in this case is speaking 90% Japanese and then throws in the english word music. If you are a Japanese person with no English comprehension, my client thinks it would be good to put the equivalent of the english word in Japanese so the viewer can understand it. Does that make sense?
If you are a Japanese viewer you’ll pick up 90% of the meaning from the audio and you won’t understand the english subtitles at all, but if there’s a word or two of Japanese in the subtitles it might explain the english word you heard.
That’s my client’s thinking anyway. I’m not sure if it’s needed. In my opinion you’ll figure it out based on the context of the sentence, but I’m not used to doing subtitles like this. In a perfect world the interviewees would not have spoken a single word of English and only Japanese, or vice versa.

So according to what you wrote, we should just place the Japanese symbols inline with the english? I just want to be clear. We don’t explain it like (music=音楽), but instead do something like this (sans quotes).
“I studied 音楽 while in America.”

I think I tried that but I’ll check again. Thanks for the suggestion.
I did read about a problem with Final Cut 7 messing up XML exports. It deletes the line breaks and makes them two spaces. I’m starting to think that the import is buggy as well.

Exactly. That’s what I mean. I know the difference between non-square, square, and all that jazz. My client started the project and set it to DV/DVCPRO so I’m leaving it there for now. The quality is acceptable, and I have no issues with that so I’m leaving it alone.
The black lines ARE there though. Even when importing into After Effects you do see them. And I know you don’t believe me, but restarting allowed Compressor to work exporting at 640×480 as h264. Have no idea why, but it’s working now.

DV/DVCPRO NTSC. Would the codec really matter though? I mean between Uncompressed, ProRes, or DV/DVCPRO NTSC? I would just assume the quality would be different?
I just restarted my machine, did a File > Send to Compressor and constricted it to 640×480 and it removed the black line on the right. I’m able to use h264 and Compressor now. Go figure…I tried this about a million times already. It still shows up as 655×480 in Quicktime Pro, and all the way up until the restart it was displaying at 655×480 in compressor too.

I’m using Final Cut Pro 7.0.2…thought I mentioned that. Sorry. That’s where I’m getting that ‘weird’ size but it looks fine. I thought it was a weird size as well, and usually I just stick to 640×480 but for some reason it’s always 655×480. Whether I use a reference movie, or do the easier File > send to compressor in final cut. I googled that size and it seems to be a common size or at least a common problem. I’m really not worried about the resolution though, I’m just trying to remove the thin black line on the right.
Crop does nothing…what the hell Apple?! I’ve tried cropping it by 10 pixels and it still shows up. After testing numerous methods last night, this seems to be a bug in Compressor and Quicktime if I export H264’s. If I’m exporting Mpeg4s they look fine out of QT but have the little line in Compressor.

I’m definitely experiencing the missing line breaks on import to Final Cut. I’ve been exporting XMLs just to do a ‘find and replace’ on text attributes at once since this seems to be a missing feature of FCP. I do the changes, resave the XML, import to FCP and it loses all the line breaks for sub titles. Everything else works fine though.
