A hard limiter and a noise gate are not the same thing…Not even close. And most major TV and film projects will not use any type of limiting at all. My instructions have always been very clear…No limiting and very little compression. With film, the level is essentially set close to an overall RMS level, which is in no way related to -6dB. Closer to -25 RMS is much more what you would expect to see. Everything about the film will follow that average level, including previews and trailers. It is different for every film.

You need to use Noise Reduction. Select an area of only noise in Edit View. Then go to Effects > Restoration > Noise Reduction

Hit “Capture Profile” After it captures, hit “Select Entire File”

The preview and mess with settings until it sounds good. The left-to-right slider is the easiest way to make adjustments. I like to use a spectral decay rate of 35% or less. Other than that, play and listen.

Normalization doesn’t alter the dynamics…It simply amplifies the entire file equally. Normalizing to 0dB (100%) is similar to turning the volume of your stereo up as loud as it will go without distorting. Compression makes the file more even, as far as dynamics are concerned. Normalization doesn’t change the relative dynamics.

While it’s designed for Ozone and mastering, it’s really good at explaining compression and limiting in terms that are easy to understand. If you’re having trouble grasping something you read, skip it…This guide will really help you, and it’s a good article for beginners and pros alike!

The preset name is “Classic Soft Knee” and has nothing to do with classical music. Generally, you wouldn’t want to compress classical music at all.

I think it’s important that you understand how dynamics processing works. The knee simply refers to the bend in the graphical plot. A “hard knee” would plot as two straight lines. A “soft knee” makes more of a curving shape.

Take the time to read the help file and some other material on compression. Understand attack, release, ratio and threshold and you’ll have a much better idea of how everything functions.

Many of the Audition algorithms are equal to third-party plugs. The Waves L1 and L2, for instance, use an identical algorithm to Audition’s hard-limiter. There are some goodies out there worth buying, though. To expand, not replace the available effects.

Audition doesn’t offer MIDI, which is a need of many musicians. It also has roots as Cool Edit 96, which was basically a toy. LOTS of people do use Audition, however. It is a standard in the radio industry.
