Thanks for your input.

Your technique does work for moving the transition the first time so I get the same effect as if it was starting at the cut.

But the problem is that the dissolve is still centered on the transition. Any change to the duration of the dissolve immediately reveals that it is not starting at the cut any more.

In addition, removing the transition later and going with a straight cut has the edit happening much later than intended.

Apparently FCP Version 10 is not capable of performing a transition starting at the edit.

Yeah, I just gave that a try and it is not what I’m looking for. Dragging that little symbol moves the entire edit point, not just the alignment of the effect with respect to the transition point.

If I make an edit on an exact frame where I want to start the transition to the next frame, how do I align the transition to EXACTLY that frame. There is no way to restrain the dragging operation to snap to the edit point that I can find.

It certainly looks like Version 10 can only do transitions centered on an edit point. But I mark edit points at the very end of the last syllable of a sentence, so the audience experiences the transition start as soon as that thought is over. And I use transitions of various lengths, dependent on content, and revise these lengths over time, but always want them to start at the edit point I originally marked.

I seem to recall the early GVG 141 having this same issue…

Thanks for the reply – I’ll give that a shot.

I don’t know how I can make that work efficiently for me though. I usually mark where I want a transition to start, and then put the next shot there. I only marked where I wanted them centered when I edited film, but that was in the early 80’s.

It can’t currently do that, but AJA can (as you noted).

I requested this feature and was told that it was coming. But that was more than a year ago and I’ve seen nothing.

Hi Dr. Shane –

Thanks for your reply. A wide variety of images can cause the issue. They tend to run 3000x2200ish into a 1920×1080 sequence. Just loading them into the Viewer kills FCP.
