Thanks guys. Will give your solutions a go. Found a workaround which was to copy the mask path to the position of a null, although for reasons I can’t work out the copied path was significantly offset from the original.
Not too much trauma to reposition it, and doubtless a fairly simple explanation, but odd nonetheless.

That simple huh?
Blushing now…It worked, thanks!

Hey Ted,
The main reason is because of what I’m doing with the pre-comp in the next comp.
It’s a circular image with an outer rim that has a ‘lifecycle’ on it. I’m rotating the outer rim around the static central image which involves duplicating the pre comp and masking out the centre of the one that rotates.
I’ve come up with a kludge which is dragging the original image into the new comp, making it 3D and lining it up with the rotating rim. (God I hate explaining these things!)
Seems to work, but now have a UFO in my comp. (See other post).

Ok, here’s the screen shots. As you can see, in the first one from AE, there’s a very faint line in the bottom right corner of the screen, outside the main image.
When rendered, the line is much more pronounced. The line follows the same point on the outer rim of the image which is rotating around the static central image.
I’ve tried masking around the original image and the issue persists and I’m convinced it’s coming from the duplicated 50 layers comp – is there a way to mask around all those layers?

The problem appears to be something to do with FCP and how it handles alpha. I’ve had some weirdness before with that.
The subs were leaving me as animations, mills col+ at 25fps, but going into the designer’s AE at this strange 1.042 frame rate.
I tried exporting as h264, with no alpha and told the designer to set the comp mode to screen. Voila, the subs import at the right frame rate.
It may also have had something to do with me being on mac and him being on pc, but either the issue has been worked around, if not exactly resolved.
And a pain in the ass for me who had to re-export 50 odd subtitle clips at h264…
-
Sorry.
The codec of the presenter clip is ProRes
I’m running AE CS5
The subs were created using the outline text generator inside FCP, then duped into their own timeline and exported as animation, millions of colors+

Hi Dave,
Think I left out a vital piece of the information – I had originally intended this for the FCP forum before thinking it was more of an AE issue.
The presenter clip and the subtitle were done, and exported from FCP – the subs using QT conversion.
It’s importing them into AE where the 25fps becomes 1.042 for some reason…

February 11, 2011 at 2:26 pm in reply to: Canvassing opinion. Tidiest way to edit single camera interviewI have B-roll that would work, sorta. But as it doesn’t directly relate to what’s being said I want to avoid using it.
As for the shooter, um, that was me. I was one man banding that day, (damn 2011 and its budgets!), having to light, shoot, mic and interview. I left the framing deliberately a little loose to allow for the subject shifting around, but there was no opportunity to reframe the shot while rolling. Pretty successful all round actually. The only thing I’d change if I did it again would be to hide the tangle of wires underneath the guy’s monitor in the background – I didn’t notice it at the time and it is a tad untidy!
If I’d had more time, it was literally wrap one interview then scoot to the next one), I would’ve shot a few extra angles, (hands, eyes etc) but it was literally wrap one interview then scoot to the next.
With regards to the edit, the option is there to upscale the second answer to around 140% without loss of resolution and it looks pretty seamless so I’ll go with that.
Cheers!

I think you’re right about the jump cuts. A quick test has shown how far I can push the upscaled before it starts getting blocky which is further than I thought.
As for the cutaway options, I don’t mind seeing them when they refer directly to what the interviewee is talking about but in this case, they’d be semi relevant at best simply to hide an edit. A pet hate!

Hi everyone. I’ve trashed preferences and although this seems to have fixed the alpha issue in most cases, it’s still persists in the original extrusion issue.
But I think I have this figured out, and just my luck I appear to have stumbled on one of those FCP idiosyncrasies that basically boils down to: ‘screw you, you can’t do that thing you were trying to do.’
The issue is with the gradient edge I’m trying to apply to the extrusion. I wanted it just on a gray scale, darkening towards the bottom edge but not going to 100% black.
However, anything less than 50% black and FCP can’t determine where the alpha channel should go. At 50% and up, the extrusion exports just fine with the alpha channel in place.
What this means is I can’t fake up the nice 3DMax style ‘clay’ render which was the effect I was getting all excited about. Boo hiss as they say.
