August 6, 2012 at 3:40 pm in reply to: Audio in PPro STILL leaving a lot to be desired… Audio only playing back on right channelHi Jeff,
I can’t rule out some sort of glitch since this is the first time in CS6 this has arisen. Back in the 5.5 days, things like this would happen all the time – you had to specify the type of audio a particular track would play and god help you if you try to put anything else in there.
All I can say is, PPro is not treating what should be a stereo track as stereo, and attempting to pan it, dupe it to a different track or anything else doesn’t seem to work. (And yes, I tried Fill Right as well as that had no effect either).
I’m still relatively new to PPro, (from FCP of course), but I can say you never encountered these sorts of problems with FCP. If audio was panned left or right, it was a 1 second fix.
For the life of me, I can’t find the 1 second fix in PPro.

Window>Workspace>Editing should do it, or Reset Current Workspace to bring up the default.

Thanks Everest… So to get it straight in my head, so long as something’s been shot correctly on 8-bit or 420 – capturing as much shadow and highlight detail as possible, 5d to RGB will increase the latitude of the shot for grading and post-production?
I’m interested as I’m picking up a new FS700 next week and I want to know what my options are for making the most of the avchd codec!

Thanks Todd.
3 year old machine, so it may be time to invest in a processor upgrade. Will check your links too.
Cheers!

Hi Todd,
The sequence is an xdcam 35mbps 25 1080P.
The footage is a real mishmash of stuff we’ve shot for our client and rushes provided from then at various different frame rates and resolutions. Some clips have been upscaled using Magic Bullet Instant HD, which is pretty processor intensive.
In the past I would’ve taken the time to transcode all the non-PAL frame rates to 25P whilst scaling the clips at the same time outside of the editor, but I really wanted to see how CS6 would cope with differences.
The honest answer is pretty well! The step-up in the editing experience from 5.5 to 6 is amazing. Generally speaking, it’s handling things fine until I start applying effects and filters. Audio was a real bugbear for me too compared with the ease of FCP, but CS6 has really addressed that issue.
Playback has improved a lot of 5.5- I think as a result of the Mercury Playback Engine now playing nicely with more processors, but there is still this annoying lagginess in places – even if I render the clips.
My MacPro is an early 2009 model, so I’m not averse to the idea that it might simply be getting old. But I would like to hear professional opinions!
Cheers,
D

Todd, Jason, thanks so much for your input. Always appreciated!

Thanks Jason, price point is around right – was hoping for something in the sub 1k market. Do you know if SmallHD have resolved the issue with the display having a slightly yellowish cast?

Hi Jonathan,
No, I haven’t tried Audition. Principally due to not having had time to get stuck into it, but also because I’m not a fan of jumping outside the software unless I have to.
Will check it out though – are there any good tutorials on it?

Very hard to tell to be honest. As I said in the original post, it’s almost like the sync is warped rather than slipped, so telling if it’s the audio or video is impossible.
What I can say is that FCP7 has sorted it. And that audio in general on PPro really drags it down. I hear Adobe have plans for an overhaul in CS6, thank god…

February 27, 2012 at 9:49 am in reply to: Magic Lantern: An important lesson learned!Update:
Ok, this is quite embarrassing to admit, but it seems that user error was the cause of the issue, not hot-swapping the cards.
According to the ML user group on Vimeo, the latest version of ML has all models bootable from one card – the camera detects which is the correct one to use.
What happened to us was, that after swapping cards we managed to somehow knock the bitrate down to 0.1. We should have been at 1.0. As such, the resulting footage has about 10% of the quality it should have.
So the lesson here is not that ML cards aren’t interchangeable, it’s check your settings and check em again.
And perhaps don’t post on forums before checking all possibilities…
