I’ve made a dedicated iTunes library for working with FCP. I’ve got all the Soundtrack sounds there, plus several sound effects libraries, bits I’ve made in GarageBand, and so on. I put them all there as 48K aiffs, so they are ready to be directly imported to FCP.

While it’s true that all of these *should* always be available later, I still take the extra step of copying them to the project folder first.

I use an Firmtek Express34 card and an external SATA enclosure for media on my 17″ MBP. I capture DV through firewire. I also use a pair of firewire 400 drives for all sorts of related elements such as motion/soundtrack pro/live type files, music or other stuff. Been running this way for a couple of months with no troubles at all.

Is it true to say that using SATA leaves the firewire bus open to connect a deck for capture?

You can probably do most of what you want within Final Cut, or if you have FCP Studio, Soundtrack. Even Garageband has some fun features and is very easy to use. As for learning curve — well, just jump in and start playing around. It will take a bit of time to figure out some of the basics — there are plenty of tutorials running around the web to get you started, and forums like this for specific questions. There’s really no substitute for spending time in front of the computer, with the manual or a book open, and digging in. Just make sure you have a decent set of monitor speakers, and that your system is set up properly (probably the number one mistake among FCP users).
