    In case anyone is interested,

I spoke to Apple Technical Support and they did some tests while I was on the phone with them and they have identified a problem with the “resampling algorithms” in Motion 4.

If you re-size any imported graphics by making it less than 100% in scale there is a loss in definition (over smooth or blurry) if you select rendering at BEST. Also on export the “resampling algorithms” are applied again (if you select BEST) blurring the frames even more.

This may not be evident on large text elements but bitmaps (such as logos) with detail are effected greatly.

Apple suggested going back to Motion 3 until a fix is found (another update).

We managed to do this without re-installing the entire Studio 2 by just re-naming the Motion 4 application and then installing only Motion 3 application, keeping all of the content from Motion 4. Took about 10 minutes on each of our suites.

We noticed straight away that we were getting quality output from Motion again.

    Thanks Mark,

all of the tests were independent of the Kona. We are seeing these results on the computer screens as seen in the JPGs I posted.

    Thanks John,

I guess have looked too many samples on-line have been unable to get the same results. I’ll do a few more tests and play with the settings a bit more. The detail level makes sense as the likely culprit.

  • Sorry for a basic question (new to all this stuff),

Was this shot 25p (or 24p)?

What does Cinema Tools do? Is this for Slow Mo?

I have stayed away from 25p (Australia) because everything looks jittery. Is this what Cinema Tools gets rid of?

    Thanks Jeremy,

I finally found that the SDI connector on the back of the Break-Out box was faulty internally. I found this out by by-passing the box altogether. So I think I need a replacement box.

Also it’s strange that the Kona LHe card should be positioned in slot 3 as the system says that the card in not operating at full speed. I’m using a November 07 build Mac Pro.

Thanks Simmie, I tried that with no luck. I sent an email to AJA yesterday but haven’t herd back from them yet.

Yes Jeremy I have checked all of the cables and can confirm the Kona Break-Out box is being supplied an SDI signal.

Would the card being in the wrong slot stop only the SDI from working without effecting all of the other functions?

    Thanks Jerry and Wayne.

I will take up these points with the MAC supplier that I purchased the system from.

It’s good to know that I may have a problem with the hardware (in a weird way) as a new user I only have my PCs to gage the performance. I bought the MAC system because I had head/read that they were fast and reliable.

I forgot to mention that I have a AJA Kona LHe card in the system. Could this be causing problems with performance? ie old/wrong drivers?
