    Thanks.

So after I’ve done some of the training and gotten certification, how do I get projects to work on so that I can accumulate enough hands-on experience to make a real career of it?

[Ron Thompson] “Follow the COW… we got your back. “

That’s why I’m here, all right.

[Ron Thompson] “$300 for a new card..”

So I thought. But the only card I can see that costs this price is the X800, and I cannot find it for sale new anywhere on-line; the salesperson said it’s usually a 6 month wait. ATI shows it no longer available.

    Do you know better?

Okay, I’m reassured! Thank you for your patient replies.

If I do decide at some point to try the Nvidia x800XT card, can I install it myself? Is there more than one variety of such a card, so that I need to be careful not to buy the wrong one?

The advice I received from a computer repair/upgrade place about this question was:

    1) Affordable upgrade cards that will work with this machine and software are almost unavailable new and may take up to 6 months to come.

    2) Upgrade cards that are readily available and will work with this machine and software are unreasonably expensive.

    3) The existing ATI Radeon 9600 Pro card will work, if slowly, and I should just use that until I can upgrade to a new machine.

That isn’t really what I wanted to hear, and it contradicts what Apple told me about the requirements of the software, but the salesperson sounded very familiar with the problem.

Thanks to all! I now feel confident that, with a new card, I won’t need to upgrade substantially in order to learn Final Cut or use it in my first months of film school.

Ron’s experience, in particular, is very helpful. Any sense about which of the two graphics cards is more effective with this set-up? The Apple rep suggested that I buy a GeForce 6600 card, but he sounded very unsure and I have the feeling that better options must be available.

    You’re right – I mean FCS2.

Thanks. I know I’m within the official specs, but I’m wondering whether anyone has actual experience of this set-up.

The graphics card is the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro that came as the default with this machine in 2003. It’s listed on Apple’s spec sheet, but… chottō… …
