I turned off the automatic keyframes and set the other to 300, which helped the overall quality a teensy bit, but I’m still getting the soft blockies on the last 3 frames (though not quite as pronounced).

For our purposes I think it’ll probably be ‘good enough’… I can’t say that I’ve ever been satisfied by anything less than great though.

Just seems odd that the last 3 frames would degrade like that since all motion stops about 5 frames earlier. If the prior frames don’t change, somehow I have it stuck in my head that the image should improve. ;o)

Thanks again, Daniel. If you have any other suggestions, I’ll surely try ’em out!

    Hi Daniel,

I’ve got ‘Key Frame Every 30 Frames’, and auto key frames enabled (set to 10). Minimum distance to key frame is also set to 30. Min quality set to 50, max set to 85

WooHoo!! That was it. Setting to Internal TC is counter-intuitive to say the least, but now working as advertised. Thanks for that, Jeremy. And I don’t take anything personally on any forum… it’s hard to discern intent without having facial expressions and tone-of-voice, so thanks again Bob for the clear instruction on the manual procedure (frustration with nOObs notwithstanding). ;o)

Just look at the VTR. Forget the computer. On the 75, go to INTERNAL, PRESET. Put in a TC # – any TC number – not just the 00:58 you want (that starts at 1 hour). Put in 7 hours, just for the hell of it. Now, hit play and record. Does the 75 start recording code at 7 hours, or does it jump to 1 hour like before. If it does, you are not setting up your VTR correctly.

Thanks Bob – I changed the settings on the deck for the test to Internal-Preset-Record Run, and it started recording where I told it to. So if I leave everything as-is except to switch back to External TC, then FinalCut should be able to send whatever TC I tell it to when blacking the tape, no?

    Hey Jeremy,

I’ve got 3 switches for TCG: Int/Ext, Preset/Regen, and Rec Run/Freerun. Then there’s the LTC/Auto/VITC (set to Auto), NDF/DF (set to DF), VITC On/Off (set to On), and the ID Preset On/Off (set to On). I’ve tried both preset and regen, and rec run & freerun. Not sure if I’ve tried all permutations of those two switches, though.

I am indeed using the black and code button. Trying to, anyway. 😀

Edit: Just tried it again using Preset and Rec Run with the same results. I did notice something new, however. I have the ioHD display set to show primary in and LTC – the ioHD is showing 01:00:00;00 after I kick off the black & code, but before the deck responds. Wonder if it’s an Aja issue?

    Hey Jeremy,

    That’s exactly how I’ve been using it… ;o)

I’m just not crazy about the interface – scrolling is jumpy and slow (on a dual quad 3.2 w/16GB RAM and upgraded video card), giant ‘targets’ in the batch window, no right-click in the preset/destination window to create new presets or folders, a history window that just won’t stay gone… it just doesn’t seem very ‘Apple’.

Once it’s set up and tweaked, though, it does kick some serious a**. It plowed through 8 hours of video clips -116 files – in about 20 minutes. I DO like that part an awful lot.

    Thanks again!

[Jeremy Garchow] “1) Use Compressor and it’s Reverse Telecine feature and then set up a batch that way.

    2) You have to set the A frame in Cinema Tools. Meaning on each clip, you will have to tell Cinema Tools where the A frame is so there’s no batching

    3) See number 1

    Jeremy”

Didn’t know about the caveat with #2…

I went with a combination of 1 & 3, and that was the ticket. Should have done that to begin with, but most everything I’ve reversed has come through great with Cinema Tools.

If Compressor’s interface wasn’t so freakish, I’d probably enjoy using it more. With qmaster & virtual clustering, it screams on my dual quads.

    Thanks, Jeremy!

October 24, 2008 at 4:29 pm in reply to: How to assign Ram/memory to an App??

[stu aull] “Can you – how DO you – assign ram use to an application?
In OS9 you could do this, but how in Tiger??
Want to make sure my FCS Motion is getting lots of juice.”

    Hey Stu,

One of the benefits of Mac OS X is vastly improved memory management, so the manual assignment of RAM is no longer necessary. Applications will be allocated RAM as they need it without you having to intervene.

Having said that, sometimes poorly behaved applications don’t release RAM that they’re no longer using, so I find it useful to quit any apps that aren’t necessary to the active process (if it’s going to be memory-intensive).

Additionally, it is possible to tell the system to give CPU priority to a specific app via command line, or with a GUI app that does the same thing:

So that would be: out to tape -> ingest w/vertical crop @525i29.97 ?

Looks like that should be it – will post back w/results.

    Thanks!
