Also, Ken – that ISO file is a disk image. You need to open it and point Handbrake (or whatever) to the VIDEO_TS folder inside the image… apologies if that’s been tried.

You see, I’ve a bit of a quandary… I deleted my FB account over a year ago due to philosophical, practical, and security issues with the site. I don’t plan to go back, but also don’t relish the idea that good and useful conversations with people familiar with topics I care about might one day only exist there.

Gives me the willies just thinking about it. Plus, having been raised in Wisconsin in a dairy family, cows are my people!

I did some fairly extensive tests on our internal network after purchasing the Synology, and at the time, SMB was half the speed of AFP. I tried turning off packet signing, changing a few other settings that should have helped, but couldn’t get anything near gigabit so I’ve left it on AFP.

Other info – Synology DS1010+ with expansion chassis DX510 – each box is a volume (1 normal share, 1 iSCSI block-level volume) – SNS globalSAN initiator on 2 workstations – ethernet ports bonded – RAID5 – jumbo frames enabled

Due to age, this combo will be retired this year. Synology doesn’t support it anymore and the last DSM version available doesn’t support macOS auto-saving, which causes hard crashes when trying to open and edit files remotely. The SMB implementation also seems to conflict with current versions of the macOS implementation. File copy is still okay, but it really needs to go.

I’ve got the firewall on – unchecked Block all / checked Automatically allow built-in to receive / checked Allow signed / checked Stealth mode.

No issues with Synology NAS (AFP / SMB / iSCSI). At least, nothing to do with the firewall. SMB has been unreliable and slow, so I don’t typically use it.

I see this regularly as well. It manifests as the default look for the specific title, accompanied by a little overlay that says “Loading Title Blah Blah whatever”. Usually, it goes away quickly. Other times I can click around other spots in the timeline or switch views and it’ll come back. And occasionally I need to quit / relaunch FCPX for the title to show properly. (edited for clarity)

FWIW, I have background rendering Off (always), and I like to leave files in place and keep everything out of the libraries when possible.

There are a couple of things in that suite which might work – QT Repair and Media Salvage.

It’s gotta be a corrupt file. You could also try exporting portions of the .dv clip… either in QT7 or FCPX. Start with the first half, then the second. If it bombs, split the half in half and repeat until you find the frames that are hosed. I think, if the section of the file you’re trying to export is good, it’ll let you export the good bits. Maybe.

This, I think, is the correct diagnosis. There’s a UNIX command line tool (built into MacOS) called ‘dot_clean’ that can be run from Terminal.app.
