  • instead of trying to figure out the problems the update caused it may be faster to do a startup drive reformat and clean install of everything. That way you can start out with earlier versions of FC Studio and the OS10.6.0 install discs which will at least get you up and running again. And then don’t let the Pro Apps updater run. That’s what I would do.

Did you try trashing the FCP preference files? A re-install will not delete them.

Make sure the timeline you’re dropping your clips into is also set to progressive. The movement you’re describing sounds consistent with progressive footage in an Interlaced timeline. If this is the case then changing the sequence settings to progressive for that timeline will not solve the issue. You need to create a new progressive sequence, copy and paste your work into the new sequence then delete the old one.

If you’ve already checked this out and everything is set properly and you’re still getting line twitter then it’s because your camera’s sharpness setting is too much. Thin lines dividing areas of high contrast will also do the same thing in the timeline. To solve the issue you’ll have to use the flicker filter on all those clips. And don’t experiment with the different flicker filter strengths because that’s a waste of time with heavy line twitter. Go straight to the maximum setting and that should get rid of most of it. If there’s still some left then put a very very light gaussian blur on the clips until the twitter is all gone.

Yeah, Premiere will have the most similarity out of all present NLEs if you’re coming from FCP 6 or 7. Although I have FCP 7.0.3 still on my system (and still love it) I’ve gone to Avid Media Composer 7 with the Symphony Option. I never could develop an attraction to Adobe, but to each his own.

[Jonny Cates] “”Do I have to export each individual CLIP as a Quicktime – and re-import them again?”

Yes. This is a render bug with the smoothcam filter and it’s a known issue that’s present even in the last version of FCP 7.0.3. Don’t expect any fixes either, because Apple stopped support for FCP a couple years ago. The work around is as you suggested: render the smoothcam clips, export them as a self-contained .mov and then re-import them back into the timeline.

For those who can’t wait to upgrade to OS 10.9 Mavericks and are NOT in the middle of a project (Don’t be a fool Jim!) here’s a link to a Tool Farm article that talks about what software works and what doesn’t work at the moment with this new operating system.

Thanks to Kevin P. McAuliffe from Toronto for this link that he talked about on his “Post” podcast.

October 29, 2013 at 12:53 am in reply to: Zoom Control for Sony PMW200 Camera

I use a Libec ZC-9EX on my EX1R and EX3. I just checked the PMW-200 operation manual and it looks as though the lens connection is the same (on the front of the hand grip).

The Libec is a pretty simple controller but it works well and is inexpensive compared to other controllers for this family of cameras. Make sure it works on your particular camera before spending your money.

    Michael,

Contact me offline and I might be able to email you the DVCPro HD Quicktime 7 components. There are several of them but heck, it’s worth a try.

[Michael Pruitt-Bruun] “i’ll see if i can get the full HD version into QT7. thanks a lot for your help!”

Sorry for the run around. I would for sure though post your query in the panasonic forum right here on the COW. There has to be someone there like Shane Ross who would know where to get those DVCPRO codecs for QT 7. Shane was editing with DVCPRO for years.

[Michael Pruitt-Bruun] “does your QT7 have a full HD output option?”

Yeah, there’s everything in there: all the flavours of DVCPRO HD. I do have FCP 7.0.3 on my system so maybe that’s the reason. I’ll bet it’s available through the Quicktime section of the Apple web site or from Panasonic. The DVCPRO codecs were originally for those cameras.

……and I thought I had this problem solved for you. It seems to be getting more complicated. The problem is that the DVCPro codecs aren’t used a lot anymore because of more efficient and lighter weight codecs like Pro Res and DNxHD.
