Why is it that the really smart ones are always in the UK? It’s like another British Invasion like back in the 60’s. Even my previous FCP/Motion teacher escaped back to the UK and is now in league with Rick Young from MacVideo. I feel like such a video shmuck out here on the talent-starved wilds of the Canadian west coast.

If what you read is accurate the first retail place to check would be B&H Photo. They would be the first to lower their prices but they haven’t changed as yet.

Trim is not available if it’s set to line level input (the switches by the XLR connections). Trim will also be unavailable if the mic channels are set to AUTO.

Ask your camera operator to hit RESET ALL in the OTHERS menu of the EX3. But first, if there are any picture profile or other custom settings dialed in they should be saved to either one of your media cards or to a computer, because they’ll be lost during the reset. This is probably the first thing I would try, but it sounds like it might be a software issue. You could also try pulling the main and the memory batteries, then waiting a few minutes before putting them back. The last thing is to get it to an authorized Sony repair facility to test the hardware/software.
As may have realized by now, we’re all just guessing here at the COW and unless someone has experienced your exact issue then you may be on your own. This is why getting the EX3 to a repair facility is important. The sooner you get it there and back the sooner your camera will be reliable again.

Tutorial:
- 1) put your BPAV folder inside another folder. Call it Card #1 or whatever you choose.
- 2) start XDCAM Transfer and click on the “Add” button on the bottom left of the window.
- 3) navigate to the folder that contains the BPAV folder.
- 4) don’t open the folder that contains the BPAV.
- 5) XDCAM Transfer will have already “seen” the BPAV folder inside.
- 6) at the lower right of the window click on “Import”.
- 7) the file thumbnails should appear in the top window.

I keep thinking 7.5 or 8 stops because I remember hearing or reading those numbers somewhere. It also could have been on Alister Chapman’s XDCAM User website. If my answer can be confirmed anywhere it’s there.

You’ve switched computers but the camera still doesn’t show up on the desktop as an attached device. The cards, however, do show up when you plug them in with what……a USB reader, I’m assuming?
Okay, with what you’ve tried it sounds like a camera issue. You need to verify that the USB port on the camera is actually hot (working). If it is then the next thing to do is go to the OTHERS menu and choose to RESET ALL. Be aware that all camera settings and preferences you’ve plugged into the camera will be lost, so it’s in your best interests to copy the settings beforehand.

Thanks Todd for your response. My answers are somewhat akin to your own: I always answer to the best of my ability but also try to relate an experience that gives more meaning to a fact or opinion I’ve expressed.

Too late. My wife was responsible for this and entered our company in 2 categories. We were awarded a 1st in one and 2nd in the other. Since we’ve never entered anything before I guess it’s kinda cool. Even though it’ll probably turn out that our peers won’t have heard of these awards, that won’t matter to our clients. Now we can state on our landing page that we won something, but will only impress lay peoples’ visits to the web site. This was my wife’s goal to begin with.
It’s always nice to meet one’s goals 🙂

The operating manual for your HDR-AX2000 states that you can adjust iris, zoom and focus manually and independently from each other. The camera wouldn’t be much use if this wasn’t the case. Better consult your PDF version or the paper manual. The PDF version addresses this starting on page 30.

Perhaps, but there’s at least a 10 year difference in technology between the PD170 and the DHR-AX2000 so I doubt that they would react quite the same. There’s nothing stopping you from carrying out a little test, however. I do know that the OIS (optical image stabilization) used to be superior on the Sonys compared to the Canons. At least that was the case between my PD170 and my Canon XL2.
