Yes there is. Drag your iTunes v.6.0.2 to the trash but DON’T delete. Restart your Mac and run Disk Utility again. This workaround proved successful for someone in the FCP forum last week. Once you’ve repaired permissions then drag iTunes back out of the trash.
In the new version of iTunes is a program that runs in the background called iTunes Helper. It seems to be messing up Disk Utility when you go to repair permissions. The permanent fix is to go back to iTunes v.6.0.1. OR…trash the Mac chess game (of all things).

Looks like your upgrade to v.5. will cost you $699USD if you’re about to purchase v.3 and then upgrade from that. If you already had v.4 the upgrade would be $99USD. BTW, you can’t buy just FCP anymore, but have to upgrade to Final Cut Studio.

Is FCP running slow with all your projects or just the longer/bigger ones? If your answer is the latter then you need to break your larger projects up into smaller pieces. If your answer is the first one then you need to do some system mantainence.
The LaCie 1 Tbyte drive will run more lowly than say, their Big Disk Extreme 500 Gbyte drive. I have both and only use the 1 Tbyte drive for archiving purposes. I’ve never used it for editing, although it’s probably fast enough for a couple streams of NTSC DV.

Jeff, I think it might be that new iTunes process called “iTunes Helper.” Of course, this is just a guess and someone would have to conduct a test to be sure. What it does is to monitor your listening habits and then when you go to the iTunes Store a raft of similar tunes will be pulled up for you. Some will like this new feature and some will call it spyware. In any event there’s an option to simply turn it off within iTunes. I guess you know what I’m thinking now, don’t you? Will turning off iTunes Helper fix the Disk Utility issue…….

It’s definitely a conflict with iTunes 6.0.2 and Disk Utility. Go back to iTunes 6.0.1. and you’ll be right as rain afterwards. OR………..you can delete the Mac chess game. Don’t ask me why this works, but it does. Curiouser and curiouser……..

Copy the project file on to your startup drive and try opening it again. If it fails to open then start a new project and see if FCP boots properly as an empty project. If that works then you know that there’s something in the problem project that’s stopping it from opening up properly i.e. a corrupt project file.

Using a polarizing filter definitely helps a little to saturate the colours, but the downside is that it also decreases the light entering the lens by a small percentage, so keep that in mind if you decide to use one.
You can also go to the in-camera menu and increase the saturation levels a bit as well. Since it’s a school camera used by many others, someone may have already been fiddling with the menu settings. To return the camera to its basic default colour setting you can pull the memory battery and reinstall after a couple seconds.

Not being a windows person my best advice would be to ask this type of question in a PC forum. I’m sure you’d get a lot more results there because your trouble sounds more like a PC/software issue than a video camera issue.

Any Mini DV camera with a firewire connection will do. There will be no difference in picture quality between the cheap camcorder and your aquisition camera when you capture to your computer. I use a small Sony camcorder for capturing that I bought at Sears. It was brand new but was missing some items that I didn’t need anyway, so they sold it to me at a very reduced price.
Always better to wear out an inexpensive camcorder than to use your aquisition camera as a tape deck.
