  • Apple could have made it easier if they allowed 3rd party GPU natively. But the Mac platform required custom EFI and OS native drivers to make it work. If not, then you needed Apple to bless the drivers. I think Nvidia did a great job providing great hardware even though they were never fully welcomed by Apple. They were tolerated at best.

Nvidia added years to the Mac Pro cheesegraters. Resolve and other GPU heavy apps flourished with the cheesegraters because NVidia provided the drivers needed to run a more powerful GPU than the terrible D700 in the MP2013.

Even now, using 3rd party AMD GPUs is not smooth!
But Apple’s financial interest and corporate philosophy (closed ecosystem) ensures that it will always be the case.

Try changing the Source Settings, in particular the quality of the playback (resolution, debayer, etc).

If that does not work, see if a different version of the R3D plugin can fix it.

Careful. The limited feedback I have seen on those have not been great. I use the USB 3 version of it and it has been OK. A couple of them died on me already.

Since saying they are under NDA is already a violation of your NDA, they should just spill the beans! LOL

The issue affected dual D700 configurations only AFAIK. We only have dual D700 in our facility. We have several dozens. And at least 6-8 of them have exhibited the issue.

The issue is well documented and Apple even ran a repair program.

Though the issue supposedly affected MPs manufactured between “February 8, 2015, and April 11, 2015” there have been reports of issue outside of that range, including some of ours.

Well I had to take that into consideration.
What good is all that if the thing sits there like a brick?”

We all do, this is why MP 2013 is such a mess. A brick once your GPU overheats.

That said, we had nothing but an incredible experience with the HP z series, most have been stable and durable. And those that were less than perfect, HP’s incredible warranty and support took care of it.

haha. It would be an overclocked and heavily discounted CPU.

[Eric Santiago] “I have a hard time swallowing that.
I went through 3 HP Z240s due to Thunderbolt card issues.
Every time it went down, they blamed it on the mobo and so they replaced the whole box.
I lost a lot of rendering projects during that mess.”

I’m not understanding. You are talking about stability and tech support. I was talking about configuration and price point. The fact that HP can be configured with the Bronze, Silverio, Gold and Plat Xeon it means your options are well below and well above the Xeon W configured MP2020, not to mention the ability to use NVidia cards.

After the debacle that was Trashcan 2013, we are definitely all in for the MP2020. Price-wise, I don’t see it being any different from HP z8 (which are wonderful boxes IMHO). It is just hard to compare because z8 uses the Plat/Gold Xeons and the MPs will use the W series. Plat/Gold Xeons gives you more flexibility.

Second, we do not know how the GPU landscape will be for this new MP. Luckily, AMD’s newer GPU seems to be competitive at least in the mid-range price point. Either way, I’m looking forward to the new MP2020 and retiring dozens of MP2013.

HP z boxes will still offer the most flexibility in terms of configuration and price point. MP2013 offers PCIe for Mac users (LOL).
