Both FCPX and PP seem to slow down very quickly there. More so than I’d expect. I wonder though how hard they are working your system to achieve these results?
I don’t have a mac to try this on but have you ever monitored RAM, CPU usage and computer temperature when using these two? I did some very non scientific tests on my PC running the same footage through PP5.5 and Edius. I wasn’t surprised that PP was chocking on footage Edius happily played at full speed but I was surprised that PP was running my computer massively harder. I forget exact numbers but it was using a lot more ram, a lot more CPU (at least a few full cores worth) and the internal temperature of the computer was significantly higher. All while giving me blocky playback.
I’ve never used Premiere much since then as I figure the easier my NLE is on my PC the longer my PC will last- no idea if that’s true mind, it just seems like common sense.

I don’t use FCX but I don’t necessarily have to worry about those things either. If I’m shuffling things around in Edius I can just stick the time line into tracks locked, ripple mode and everything will dance out of the way with no overwriting or clip collissions.

I do the occassional large editing job now and then. I’m not a day in day out editor with a constant stream of income like a lot of you.
I started off with a pirated copy of FCP 5 (I think) which allowed me to edit my first feautre. It was a hobby job with no money coming in and very little going out. Shortly after I got a big commercial job and thought I’d spend $1500 of it investing in FCS3. That was a significant outlay for me but I thought I was investing in tools that would see me through years of work with regular updates/bug fixes/etc. Imagine my joy when a few months later Apple discounted the very expensive software I had just invested in.
So, screw Apple I says, and jump over to PC. Adobe is a safe bet for software. Apple might be more interested in toys but Adobe 100% relies on the sales of their software and thus it’s a safe buy. Actually I edit in Edius now but the rest of the suite was what I was really interested in. Anyway, I invest in that and shortly after BOOM! CS is gone. There was no benefit to spending a couple grand on it at all. I’m in the same boat now as anyone coming on board a few months after I did.
Now as I say these were significant purchases for me. I expected the software to be updated and with me for the long haul. In my view I got screwed twice in quick succession by 2 mega companies. Software piracy is obviously not a good thing for the industry but I’ve got say I have zero sympathy for the likes of Apple and Adobe.

Neat trick. Did that but I didn’t think to refresh myslelf first as to how PP usually runs for me. I really only jump in there very occassionally for Magic Bullet (which along with Audition/AE integration is the only thing I prefer in PP to Edius) and after performing the hack I now can’t tell whether it’s better than it was or not because I don’t recall exactly how it was. Still sits for me at being faster than AVID while a good clip below Edius.

Ah, never seen that list. I had just assumed.

I’ve got a nVidia Quadro 1000. That’s supported isn’t it?

I have Premiere and Avid on my system as well. They’re not bad for real time performance they just start to choke a lot faster than Edius.
I tend to have at least 3 layers of colour effects on every clip. In the project I’m doing at the moment I frequently have four or five such clips in a single frame all of which are in motion using the Layouter- a very cool Edius tool where you can keyframe the motion of your clips in a similar manner to AE- and rarely have to think about rendering. Actually its really only when there’s two or more masks in the frame as well as all those colour corrected layers that I have a need to render.
Mind you my system might just be in the sweet spot for Edius. I recently sat down in a studio that had Edius running on a machine with 24 processors and massive graphics cards etc. They weren’t getting a lick more performance than I was on my humble home PC.

Don’t be unusure about Edius. It’s amazing. Of the options you list it’s the most stable, the most powerful*, works with seemingly all codecs without blinking and has the most comprehensive colour correction tools of the lot. Throw in cool tools like the ripple mode and it’s one of the most flexible as well. I came to Edius after editing for a few years on FCP and it was such a revelation I was kind of pissed no one had told me about Edius in all that time.
The interesting thing with Edius is they seem to have no advertising budget or else are keen to keep their software a secret.
If you’r ejust listing all the professional options then I’d add Lightworks to the list. I couldn’t get it stable on my system but from the toying I’ve done it’s pretty powerful and has edited its fair share of Oscar winning features. More than FCP anyway.
*An elastic term but I use it to describe the system that can do the most without rendering.

Surely the moderators aren’t so slack around these parts that we have to self moderate?
But I didn’t post this over on the Edius forum because not only is it tumbleweeds over there but I figured Edius users were already well aware of the improvements. This forum, in theory as I understand, is for ex-fcp7 users (I’m one) to debate their options moving forward. This is a serious option.
If I didn’t compare it to FCX up front that that’s only because in the areas that I consider important: Perfomance (for me perfomance is just how much you can do without having to render), versatility (the ability of the software to mould itself to its users prefered way of working), colour tools and stability (Edius has crashed on me once in two years. I’m told I’m unfortunate in that) Edius is so far in front of FCX in my eyes that they are not comparable. Obviously others value other things in edit software so there are other debates which is all well and good.
My point ultimately is, if you’re a long form editor Edius is now as solid an option for you as it is for people working on commercials.

Edius is one of the very strong “or not” options. I was just pointing out that with the new update its an “or not” option for a lot more people.
