[Wayne Carey] “Well, the question has to be… what is the major of footage shot? Is it 1080p or 720p? If its 720p, then I’d convert the 1080p to 720p and the opposite if its 1080p.”

It is pretty much an even split. I would say there might be a BIT more of the 720 footage.

[Wayne Carey] “Now, that is crazy… Why would you want to convert anymore? If its beacuse you only have an HDCAM-SR, then I would consider renting the D5 machine to keep it clean. All of those converts can make for poor quality on the final output.”

This is not my choice. We have an HDCAM-SR deck, but no D-5. There is ZERO dollars left, so renting a D-5 is out of the questions, but the distributor accepts HDCAM-SR masters and do an in-house layoff to HD-D5.

Ok, I shoot 24pA and edit in a 23.98 timeline in FCP. That much I get. I know when I capture 24pA footage via firewire, I can remove the pulldown during capture. Does this happen during the P2 import as well from the firestore?

I am going to records 1080/24pA. We can’t do 24pN because we are using Firestores.
    Thanks everyone!!

The final master that I am deliverying is going to be on HDCAM-SR 1080/59.94. However, I believe the theater chain is doing their own conversion to D5, 720p/59.94 for projection. Frame accurate edits aren’t ALL that important, so can I shoot 1080/24pA on the HVX, import from the firestore (not sure how I do that one yet either!!) edit in FCP, then render out an uncompressed QT file, bring it to an online HD suite and layoff to and HDCAM-SR?

I did a test with some p2 footage where I brought the sequence into a 10-bit uncompressed (had to use apple’s) sequence and scaled it. On a dual 2.0 G5, a 10 second segment rendered in 1 minute and looked pretty darn good. Also, because it was a fairly well lit night sequence, the upconvert added a SLIGHT bit of grain that made it look more like film than any video I have ever seen!

So, my next question would be this:

If I shoot Varicam, capture and edit via firewire, can I take my cut, drop it into a 10bit/uncompressed sequence and export a QT movie? For VFX, what would be the optimal settings? Should I render out tiff or targa images sequences for the EFX shots? This is interesting…If I decide to do my own color correct, will getting a Kona 3 and a perhaps an SATA raid give me the power to color correct in FCP uncompressed?

Are you sure that the software upconvert is the same as capturing your selects through the Kona 3 uncompressed? I am not doubting your claim, just curious. It doesn’t seem to be the case, but you probably know better than me!
