This was a very good article. Hopefully this will help people understand why this is such a serious issue. I’ve seen a lot of people dismissing the loud criticism by saying that what has happened is typical for an Apple version 1 launch.
But the fact that Apple did a typical version 1 launch for FCPX is the heart of the problem. They should never have even considered going about this the way they did.

Can you switch the windows around like that in FCPX, and make it look like iMovie?

That looks cool and all, but I do agree that it seems gimmicky. Why do we need to see our location flashing on the “cover”?
Gimmicks aside, though, an e-book seems like a much better medium for this sort of message than a traditional book, since no trees had to be cut down to make it…

Mac n’ Cheese seems like a good analogy for this.
FCP X runs on a Mac, and some of the automatic stuff they demoed seems very cheesy. 😉

I was thinking the same thing- it does seem very busy. I think it would be better if there was a way to make the one you’re working with stand out more- maybe have the one that’s highlighted be in color and change the others to black and white.
Although, if the project you’re working on was shot in black and white, that wouldn’t help much…

Ok, ok… I went back and watched the video again, and there ARE a lot of things going on in that demo that I know iMovie will never be able to do, and a lot of them ARE very impressive. Sorry about my previous rant- I just feel a bit let down, knowing that some of the things I was really impressed with (like that range selection thing) are actually just glorified iMovie features.
I do like a lot of things about this. I really like how you can easily rearrange b-roll clips without knocking anything out of whack. The compound clips thing is also neat (though I think it would be better if they were a different color than normal clips, to stand out more). And I really like that color matching thing.
