[Frank Gothmann] I assume you also have access to a win machine. Why don’t you also try the other options out there, Edius, Vegas?
I haven’t looked at Vegas in a while. I may do that.
I remember you saying a lot of good things about Edius during the early stages of the FCPX debacle. Can it decode ProRes files? That was one of the things that I liked about Lightworks. That and it has AAF import and export. It seemed like moving between Lightworks and Avid (and Premiere CC, at some point) should be pretty easy because of that.
Aside from that I took the dive into Lightworks because it’s free (or very cheap) so why not. I also wanted to know more about it, because I found it very intriguing, especially the open-source aspect. It will be interesting to see where that goes in the future.
I wanted to mention it here because I remember seeing a lot of comments about Lightworks during NAB, and a couple people saying they would be keeping an eye on it, so I thought I’d do a post about my experience with it so far.

[Todd Kopriva] Yes, it would work. You could subscribe to just After Effects and Premiere Pro for this purpose.
I checked the membership plans, and there’s no plan available that would let you subscribe to “Just Premiere and After Effects”. There’s the single-app plan, and then there’s the all-apps plans.
Unless you’re saying you can do two individual subscriptions at the same time, and suggesting that this could be done in a situation like the one I described. But if you do the single-app twice, just for one month, that’s going to be 30 dollars for each app- so 60 dollars just to make a few changes. I don’t like the sound of that one bit.

May 9, 2013 at 7:47 pm in reply to: Adobe clarify reverse compatibility for After Effects CCIt’s good to know AE has backwards compatibility now. That makes me feel better about the cloud.
Of course, the downside to going backwards is the big, new, long-awaited feature in the next version (Cinema 4D) will be useless in CS6…

[Ridley Walker] Walter Biscardi, among others, is happy with it. Seems like its the one-and-two person shops that are most upset.
FWIW, I liked it too, when I knew there was a permanent option to fall back on. Now that it’s gone, I don’t find it very appealing.

[Todd Kopriva] Do you mean someone who used to pay and stopped? If so, then that person could pay a $19.99 single-application subscription for the month when they needed to restore use of the software.
If they only need to open one app, that’s fine. But what if they need to use more than one app? What if somone needs access to a Premiere Pro CC Project that has AE comps dynamically linked to it? Downloading the 30-day trial won’t work in this case, since there’s no Creative Suite available with the new versions.
I do not- repeat, DO NOT want to have to pay for a month of full-blown Creative Cloud just to make a few changes if something like this comes up.
I really wish Adobe would keep the Creative Suites going for people who don’t want to do the cloud model. Aside from giving us a perpetual licensing option it would also give the Cloud users a way to access their old projects if they leave, by making a free trial available that has everything they need.

on film, if your editing machine broke, you could actually cut it by hand. You could take out a pair of scissors and keep going. It would be awkward, it would take a long time, it would be imperfect, but you could keep going.
This is actually how I’m starting to see GIMP, in relation to Photoshop. It wouldn’t be my first choice- by a long shot. But it’s nice knowing that if I don’t have access to Photoshop- for whatever reason- there’s SOMETHING available that I can use to open a file and do some form of work with it. (if I save a copy with the layer styles rastorized, anyway…)

[Gary Huff] I’ve shot for clients still using FCP5 on a 2006 MacBook Pro.
Astounding.
I have FCP5. on a PowerMac G5. I bought it used so I could get familiar with FCP, but then when the X-bomb hit I went back to Premiere on my PC. Since I started shooting AVCHD I’m over there all the time now. I’ll be using Premiere CS5 for a good while, and will probably give the Cloud a go in some form eventually, but due to recent events I’m now giving Media Composer very serious thought.

[Aindreas Gallagher] I’m going to fork over rental cash for premiere pro. first year will cost me 100 quid. about 140 quid a year after that
Be sure to save everything as an XML when you’re done editing it. That way you can open it in your CS6 or FCP7 if you ever need to.

[Alex Hawkins] “Premiere Pro IS different. 5.5 will not open any 6 projects and so on down the line . . .
It is not backwards compatible.”
You can’t open a Premiere Pro PROJECT from the latest version in an earlier one, but if you export it to XML you can take it as far back as CS5.
