Thank you Glenn. I should have mentioned I had watched the Avid lessons (the one you found) and also Googled and watched other tutorials. Kevin’s tutorials just seemed more succinct so I was hoping he had done the tutorial he mentioned that would be devoted to more about Marquee. I had a specific problem in animating lights, but have since found the solution. Regards, Dennis

Richard’s quote”You are suffering from not knowing what you don’t know” is what many of us in all fields of endeavor know as the dreaded UNK UNKS (unknown unknowns).

Those of us new to DSLR video do our homework (read reviews, forums, etc) before buying equipment, but it would be great if this forum’s experience base could help us minimize UNK UNKS before we buy equipment. It would be very helpful if people already using DSLR video (shooting and editing also) could share the major UNK UNKS they discovered (both good and bad) once they were in field shooting.

In this regard would it be possible to start a thread titled UNK UNKS where people could post their major UNK UNKS once they began field use of DSLR video? To some extent these UNK UNKS are scattered throughout the forum, but I expect quite a few have not been mentioned due to focus on specific topics for each thread.

Matt, you mentioned Canon T2i price range and also concern with auto-focus to keep subject in focus. Have you considered Sony SLT A55? It gets good reviews and is one of few DSLR’s that provides auto-focus for video–as you note most DSLR’s need manual focus for video.

Only reason I mention the Sony is I am considering it and have read a lot about it, but am hoping some forum member has several weeks field experience with the camera and can let us know what field use showed.

I also am comparing paper specs on Sony SLT A55 and Canon Rebel T2i (in USA), but have any forum members had field video experience with these cameras which has uncovered unexpected problems or benefits? In my case, as much as I read about cameras, nothing substitutes for several weeks shooting to uncover things I didn’t think about when reading reviews or promotional literature. I just hope I don’t discover some fatal flaw.

It looks to me like both are great cameras in the $800 price range, but have some different features catering maybe to different audiences.

In my case I have used a Sony VX2000 for years mostly for “hobby” use filming vintage sports car racing and vacation scenery, but now want to get into HD at the $800 price point. The depth of field creativity offered by these two cameras interests me, but I have never fully understood how “shutter speed” relates to video cameras. Will I be able to control both shutter speed and aperature to manage depth of field in video mode for either of these cameras? In still photos I understand how you control depth of field with speed/iris, but don’t see how that applies to video? Can someone explain that?

Also it looks like for video editing (I just got Avid Media Composer 5, but haven’t “learned” it yet)the AVCHD and MPEG4 offered by Sony A55 might be an advantage over the .mov which it seems is all you get from T2i?
