One new monitor on the market is HP/Dreamworks 2480xz color critical monitor. Priced around $3500 it offers 30 bit color (10 bit x RGB) and 1920×1200 with a 4 port USB hub. It will probably occupy 5 new FCP suites we will be installing this fall. Best to both of you.

Yes – press the Video In button on the front panel below Home. On the bottom left of the LCD screen there is an HD under which F1 selects internal or digital and F2 selects which test signal (Bars, ramp, black, etc.) you want when you select internal sg. Normal operation for us is Digital and SIF PLL but we operate HD-SDI through a routing switcher.

You can just feed the machine black from your routing switcher or video switcher. Go to the home page and use the arrows to activate the top register. Then press the center button between the arrows twice and use the number pad to enter the desired TC. Then press the yellow “ent” on the right of the number pad and then record and play to start the machine. Once you press enter the numbers begin counting so give yourself a few seconds pad on the number you enter.

RE: Question 2: I assume you have an upconverter for the DigiBeta you want to record on the D5 HD.
If not, you’ll have to get one. To insert edit on existing control track press “Insert” on the control panel. This will bring up the Insert Edit menu on the LCD screen. Press F9 to turn the Insert on and use the number pad to enter a start number. Use the yellow F + number pad to enter an outgoing TC or duration.

This is in the manual but what fun is that? Just wait until you have to use the sub-menus! 🙂

I agree with Mark
I also looked at the Rowan 2008 clip that doesn’t have the narration and it’s better. I’d try to use a more impressive (but readable) typeface. I know you want the viewer to read the graphic but they held just a tick too long. The music is mildly annoying but that may be all you had to work with. Pay attention to cutting to the beat – being slightly off is distracting. If you have to use the multi-slide ending, perhaps doubling the shot count would have more impact because they are just quick impressions you want to convey. Just a few tweaks would sharpen the impact and pacing without losing the message (which as Mark said needs to be emphasized more throughout).

Hi Scott
The Epson scanner merely selects from several graphic files. I’ve changed to pct and pdf and the files still get corrupted. It may be an issue of the server receiving the files rather than the Mac. I’ve gone to local storage and I’ll see if that makes it all better.

If you have a lot of graphics to do this on, I’d buy the effects package from Artbeats. You will always find ways to use more of the effects later on. Only one effect costs $200 but the whole package is $600 for 60 clips. You could probably do this on Motion or After Effects with a good deal of time and effort but that’s re-inventing the wheel and they did the effect by burning real film.

In the opening credits of a feature film there is an Academy prescribed method for the order of credits, the director being the last credit going into the action. This must be adhered to. On the ending credits there are specific credits for specific jobs, so yes, what one is credited for is very important. This would be the basis for residuals as well, although the actual fee might be negotiated.

There was a piece on Good Morning America this morning about research on the radiation effects of cell phones on the brain. They determined there is no scientific way to absolutely prove there are any effects on the brain either negative or positive. I don’t know how many people tried to do the “experiment” but I know ones I’ve talked to who tried couldn’t get it to work.
