There is one with guides when you open New and choices for various sizes come up on the Preset selection. If you’ve already started a project just open a new window and drag the stuff there and use the guides.
Glen Stephens Tools for Television Pro also has safe title and action guides when you select a new file from TFT menus as well.

I’d keep it on DnX until you can put it on HDCamSR or D5. They are less compressed and your HD will not suffer as much. While DVCProHD is good for aquisition, it is less desirable for archiving.

I’ve been editing for more than twice as long as Jeremy but I still have the same feelings. I’m like a dog after a bone when something just isn’t right. I may take just a few changes to get it right or it may take throwing it out and trying something else. Time is a luxury even when the project isn’t under pressure.I do a lot of one man band projects because I can, but I much prefer to draw on the talents of designers, animators, musicians and anyone else willing to help on a project. That creative collaboritive thing just makes a project better. I started “designing” on a Chryon 4100 with 8 colors, then Dubner Turbo Painter and finally Photoshop and Illustrator. I’m not the greatest designer in town but when the project doesn’t have the budget my work will do. I’ve created my stations on-air graphics since before the turn of the century 🙂 because there’s no money in the budget to hire it out. There are some really talented designers and motion graphics people in Charlotte and I’d use any of their work if we could afford it. Now and then we find the money in a project to use them and I love it. The rest of the time I watch a lot of TV to steal ideas and incorporate them to suit our needs. We have a weekly news wrap-up program (we are PBS) and I stole CSI Miami’s glassy overlay thing and created the open. There may be more sizzle than steak on the :12 open but people know the program they’re watching.
Trish and Chris Meyers have some great material on motion graphics and design as well and they may be among the gurus of After Effects (tho Total Training is great too).
As someone said way earlier, be confident in yourself and I would add be collaborative when you can be. You’ll learn something from anyone who has a clue about their area of expertise. Then try it out, ask friends and co-workers what they think and most of the time they won’t hurl and may even like it. Keep at it!

I’m not the most experienced dialog editor but have done some challenging programs with really bad actors. I go for the best facial expressions and emotions and then often use the audio from the previous or next cut and sync to pic for part of the clip. This gives you the chance to slide video a few frames at the head or tail of the cut to give the right pacing and emotion. My $.05 (adjusting for inflation). HTH

We used FirstCom for several years also. The downside is you begin to hear their music in everyone else’s spots. We moved to StudioCutz buyout library and also use Digital Juice’s BackTraxx. We are a PBS affiliate and need underscores and mellow cuts for funder credits. We also use SmartSound for scoring parts of long form projects and for short pieces as well. Between the three we usually find something that fits.

Boxx Technologies makes a PC based system they certify and support. You can chose from various options depending on your wallet size. It would do great. Also the Mac G5 dual 2.7Ghz would be great. Check the websites or google for more info.

You’re right Chase
I just tried it and selecting the red eye tool doesn’t allow brush selection or any area selection as the tutorial at Adobe shows. Are we missing something?

A few details as to what you’re after might help.
You could get a shiny platinum background by using the plastic wrap filter over your non-shiny platinum background but what does platinum look like?

I do understand what Tony was saying about resolution – spacial vs. crt. I got off point.
I also found as a result of reading this thread that my BVM 20 actually only has 900 lines but does have SMPTE-C phosphors.
This has been a great thread and I’m very fortunate to have started HD production and editing four years ago with a fairly large budget(after a 1.5 yrs research). At the time the only system that would edit HD was Discreet fire*, which my station purchased. Things are much better and less expensive today. smoke on linux now does HD and Apple got back into the game bigtime.Good luck to Jeremy and thanks for a great thread.
