Having ten seconds is a good safety margin to get sync lock on a poorly maintained machine that may need a long pre-roll.
It also allows you to do a video lead into a subject in the edit. Sometimes you want the subject onscreen but under narration and then they come up full for their sound bite.
Post-roll is also important because NLEs need a couple seconds past the out point when ingesting. The photographer never knows when these things may happen so doing it automatically means you always have that safety margin.Del

Hi
Since HD is by definition 16×9 I assume you are meaning SD.
We shoot HDCam and use it for SD projects and depending on the B-roll I chose to crop or letterbox. I first try to crop but if the image is cropped too much I usually bring in the HD to the timeline (rather than downconvert on ingest) and pan within the 4×3 template. If the photographer left too little safe edge, then I letterbox. At that point I add a letterbox mask and unify the entire project. I also have to do this when I slow-mo/timewarp letterboxed footage that shows jitter at the top & bottom of the transition to black in the letterbox. Ditto for zooming or moving on the X, Y, & Z axes. When time constraints don’t allow time to do this, I concede and mix the footage.Del

I put my response in Cowmedy forum because I went there first this morning. I noted this forum is the best place to get the correct answers. Best of Luck

[Redflag] “sometimes there just isnt time”
Do you think the talent will start without you? I understand if the material you are shooting is live action for news or documentary events, but even then, edit systems need at the very least :10 of leader and trailer to ingest material easily and cue past the timecode jumps. Anything else costs time ($) and aggrevation. Trust me, you want your editor to be happy 🙂

Not to discourage you from asking on the COW, but sometimes Adobe Help is the perfect place to find the answer. Look up “guides”.

Not finding anything gives you the chance to be the first!
Use your imagination and an old film plug-in on AE after creating the still in PS. You can create your own lacy frame by scanning an old lace doily from home and pick a type that looks like it’s from that era. Courier or Century Schoolbook have been around for a long time. Then add that plug in (use restraint). You can look through hundreds of free fonts on the internet if you don’t have one that works already. Best of Luck.Del

It doesn’t matter that the show will go national on cable. What matters is the salary ranges in the city you do the work.
What did you charge as a freelancer for the same work. Add 35% to that if you haven’t included costs for your insurance, etc. and compare that figure to their offer. Is their offer higher or lower? Is the amount of work they expect worth more than what you are currently charging as a freelance contractor? The answers to those questions should give you somewhat of a baseline for a living wage.
It seems to me that for the amount of work and the potential audience $45K seems a little low, but as I said, that is determined by factors you didn’t include in the post. Best of luck.Del
