Broadcast TV is based on 30 frames/second. So if you’re going to shoot for television you should shoot 30p instead of 24p. In the end, it will have to be converted to 60i for broadcast and there are fewer potential pitfalls converting 30p to 60i than there is converting 24p.

That’s a good example of how a lot of shorter clips can leave a lot of partially-filled sectors. Whereas a few long clips will fill entire sectors and won’t waste as much of the card (or hard drive) capacity.

Drive capacity is marketed by taking the number of available bytes and dividing by one billion to get “gigabytes”.
However, technically there are more than 1.073 billion bytes in a gigabyte. About 7 percent fewer gigabytes.
Would be nice if storage media manufacturers would be a bit more honest and use the actual definition of gigabyte in their specs.
Part of the drive is reserved for the operating system and is unavailable for data storage.
Finally, hard drives are broken up into “sectors” consisting of a fixed number of bytes. A video clip will span a lot of sectors but often leaves one last sector only partially full. The next clip can’t use the “leftover” bytes in that sector and can only start on a new unused sector. So there’s always unavailable capacity on any storage medium.
These three things probably add up to your 15 to 20 percent difference in rated vs actual capacity.

If you’re going to deliver on film then I’d say go 24p.
But if you’re going to deliver to anything on broadcast, then I would recommend shooting 30p and completely avoid potential pulldown issues. The difference of the look of 24p and 30p are probably not that significant. As suggested, do some tests and see.

The idea is to record separate audio in what’s known as “double system sound”.
The independent and discrete audio tracks are synchronized later in post-production.
What you seem to be asking is whether the Edirol R-44 can act as a mixer and that’s not the best application for it. You could send audio to the camera, but rather than do that, consider using the Edirol for an additional four channels of audio while the camera records two more channels: for a total of 6 audio channels.

You will need an outboard audio recorder. Or a second EX-1.
I’m facing the same issue with a lot of things I shoot, so I recently picked up an Edirol R-44 to provide me with four additional discrete audio channels.
The Edirol R-44 is able to embed time-of-day timecode which will help me correlate the audio with the video from the EX-1. I can match up the TOD TC from the Edirol with the TOD TC from the EX-1 using SequenceLiner https://www.spherico.de/filmtools/sequenceLiner/index.html. It works in conjunction with Final Cut Pro.

I backup the BPAV folders to mirrored RAIDs. The edited programs are also backed up to mirrored RAIDs as well as a third solitary drive just in case.
The files are so large that hard drives are the most economical and fastest method of storage and retrieval.

Instead of struggling with the limited color correction features within FCP, get Walt Biscardi’s training DVD for Apple’s Color (Stop Staring and Start Grading with Color).
It’ll change your life. It changed mine. Not only do I grade everything with Color, I’m also taller and can run faster. 🙂
Color is a MUCH more flexible and capable set of tools than everything combined within FCP.
It also helps to get at least some basic training in lighting. Understanding the craft will help you make the most of creating visual moods to help with your storytelling.
