Just figured out that the TV is the issue. I had been using a Toshiba that has a wider range of signals that it will accept. Our brand new Sony Bravia does not like the 1080p25 that the camera is outputting. Toshiba was fine with this.

Thanks Arnie, these programs look good but I tried the demo versions and don’t seem to be able to get them to talk with the HDX900. I am guessing the correct codecs are not included. I will try again today.

Having been in the business 20 years I guess I have worked with an editor or two, so will not comment on the last post. I have several close friends that are great editors but sadly can’t afford to have them travel to the locations I work in. They have recommended FCP but before making the investment in a program that does way more than I need, I wanted to check for alternatives. Does n’t seem an unreasonable request.
I asked the original question as I travel to remote locations and need to manage footage in the field and send it back. Ideally I would like to go firewire out from the camera to a laptop (running FCP or alternative), capture the footage, add metadata and export QT movies as requested by the library.
I would love to be able to send the tapes to an editor or straight to the library, but the circumstances do not allow that.
