I’ve been testing Hawaiki Keyer in FCPX on some marginal green-screen footage, and I’m pretty impressed with the results. Up till now, I’ve done most of my keying in PP CC, using its UltraKey. Hawaiki Keyer is at least as good, and in some respects I like it a lot better. It really does do a nice job with edge detail, such as hair. The results shown in the HK video on CC are in line with what I’m seeing, without a whole lot of adjustment.
I’m a particular fan of the analysis view, which I think does a significantly better job than a simple matte view.

But when I import a rewrap into Premiere Pro CC, The picture is about 25% longer than the actual file, and the audio, which is the correct length, is obviously out of sync.
For example, in an 00:11:45 AVCHD test file, the rewrap shows a length of 00:11:45 in Windows Explorer. But when I import it to PP, the clip shows a length of 00:14:10. The picture is stretched out to 00:14:10, but the audio times correctly to 00:11:45.
I ran ffmbc from the command line, using a set of recommended parameters, and I got the same result. So, the problem would appear to be in ffmbc, rather than AWPro.
Has anyone else come across this problem? Any fixes / troubleshooting suggestions? Thanks.

Actually, AWPro does a re-wrap, rather than a transcode. And the app is simply a GUI for ffmbc, which a lot of people apparently use to rewrap AVCHD. So, I think it’s far more likely that I’ve got a setting wrong.
However, I suppose it would be a good idea for me to try ffmbc from the command line, just in case AWPro is feeding ffmbc a bad parameter.

Since I’m at about -18 on the PC, I should be fine.
As to the -12 setting, it goes up past consumer goods–Panny P2 and AVCCAM units calibrate to -12, which now strikes me as kind of odd.
Am I missing something? Why the different levels? I would have expected all devices to calibrate to the SMPTE standard.

A quick Google search uncovered this thread:
“Using the camera’s input level adjustments the recording level is set so the camera’s audio meters read either -18 dBFS (EBU standard level) or -20 dBFS (SMPTE standard practice).”
And Safari Books Online a section from Voice and Vision (2d Ed) that explains calibrating to reference tones.
And both agree that -20 dBFS to -18 dBFS is the standard. Can’t argue with SMPTE!

I went for -12, because that’s what I use on cameras–it’s what I was taught in a class. It hadn’t occured to me that a different setting would work better when interfacing directly with Windows. Time to do some testing.
I checked SD’s tech notes, and didn’t find anything on the proper setting.
If anyone can point me to an article on using a 1K tone to set levels on a recording device, I’d appreciate it. Thanks for your help.
