That was my understanding to, faster throughput is always good. And you’re right about the speed, the R6 is fast compared to an 800 Firewire according to the test number’s I’ve seen.

For my situation I’m getting into a lot of compositing so for normal edits my machine’s power is enough. Though the better I get I’m realizing it just requires a fast system all the way around, processor, GPU, through-put etc,.

Thanks for everyone’s comments. I just have to win the lottery to afford the machine I really want,..

until then I’ll just be waiting for the rendering to happen.

Here’s what I came up with:

My current project sequence settings in FCP 7 are:

1920×1080 HDTV 1080i (16:9)
Comp: prores 422

So in the AJA system test I used the following to test the Read Write:

Video Frame Size

DVCProHD 108060i

File Size 128MB

Write: 405 MB/s
Read 442.6 MB/s

My codec/compressor for the sequence file is Proress 422, I believe that is what you’re referring to.

My RT settings are: (ones that are checked)

Safe RT
Scrub High Quality
(playback vid qual)
Dynamic
(playback frame rate)
Full
Multiclip playback
(recored to tape)
Full Quality

I think that’s everything,

It appears that the transfer rate for the RAID seems slow (?)..

Hello Dave,

Thank you for your suggestions. I ended up using MPEG Streamclip (awesome program!) to export the audio in aiff from the original h.264 MPEG4 video, then after starting a new sequence I brought the audio in. Seemed to work a little better though still getting drop outs,..
The archive site has 3 options for downloading the original archived movie,..
h.264 MPEG4
Ogg Video
512Kb MPEG4

I used the audio from the 1st. Could you recommend which one of these would be the least compressed?

(Also the quicktime for 10.6 doesn’t have an aiff export (?)….)

Agreed! Fishy is certainly what it is,.Yep, tried that as well D, I”ve literally tried everything I can think of. I’m guessing it has something to do with the original audio from that mp4 file.

Though when I created a new sequence I just dragged the audio “static” into it and same issue was occurring.
I’ve read trashing the wave render files may help (?)..

As I understand it you’re suggesting using QTP to export the aiff from the original mp4 mov? As opposed to exporting using FCP?

I actually have done that as many times and ways as possible. (I’ve worked in digital music for years) I.e. exported aiff out of FCP, opened in Soundforge, resaved as 48k 24bit wave and aiff, brought back into FCP thinking it would help and same issue.
Last night I sent the clip to soundtrack thinking if I normalized it that would help,..same issue. Oddly I’ve noticed if I have a file “underneath” the static clip (ex. the music) it works,..though on it’s own it cuts out or doesn’t play (make sound) at all unless I turn the volume level all the way up…so strange.

Perhaps there’s something with the audio drivers?

Short of using a different audio clip, any other suggestions?

This just confirms my need to upgrade to FCP.

Alas, per your description and my limited knowledge thus far it appears that this won’t actually be the same as nesting (?). As I understand it nesting allows one to say have 3 separate clips (all on the same layer, cut, but up against each other in the timeline) and after nesting (FCP) I can do a global adjustment to all clips, i.e. change the color saturation on all without having to do each one individually (as I’m doing now in FCE). Would your answer accomplish the same thing?

Also, the way I’m working the video I have two clips. Two separate layers, one an exact copy of the other layered on top of one another, same duration of time. I’d like to “grab” both clips and size them at the same time instead of doing each one individually. It appears I can’t do this..(selecting both and trying to grab the corner to proportionally adjust both at the same time so they line up exactly.) Is this possible?

As I’m new to forums if I need to start another thread or do a search please let me know. I’m not clear on the etiquette yet.
